From the town hall, we leisurely walk towards the Samois Gate, another curiosity of Moret-sur-Loing.
This square-plan gate tower is a replica of the Burgundy Gate, located at the other end of the Grand Rue and leading to the bridge. On its exterior facade, two powerful buttresses are topped with two overhanging turrets: one houses the staircase connecting the floor to the attic, and the other is a watchtower used for surveillance.
This gate is also famous for its cannonball. But what exactly is it about? In 1814, Napoleonic France was at war with the allied powers of Austria, Prussia, Russia, and the United Kingdom. In this context, Moret found itself surrounded by Austro-Russian troops on February 15th.
The French army destroyed part of the bridge to stop the enemy's advance, which lifted the siege three days later. A cannonball, embedded in the rear facade of the Samois Gate, reminds us that the town was under fire from Austrian cannons.
Indeed, one learns many things while exploring the world.

De l'hôtel de ville, nous cheminons tranquillement vers la porte de Samois, une autre curiosité de Moret-sur-Loing.
Cette tour-porte, de plan carré, est une réplique de la porte de Bourgogne, située à l'autre extrémité de la rue Grande et donnant sur le pont. Sur sa façade extérieure, deux puissants contreforts sont surmontés de deux tourelles en surplomb : l'une abrite l'escalier reliant l'étage au comble, et l'autre est une échauguette utilisée pour la surveillance.
Cette porte est également célèbre pour son boulet de canon. Mais de quoi s'agit-il exactement ?
En 1814, la France napoléonienne est en guerre contre les puissances alliées d'Autriche, de Prusse, de Russie et du Royaume-Uni. C'est dans ce contexte que Moret se trouve encerclée par des troupes austro-russes le 15 février.
L'armée française détruit une partie du pont pour stopper l'avancée ennemie, qui lève le siège trois jours plus tard. Un boulet de canon, scellé sur la façade arrière de la porte de Samois, rappelle que la ville a été sous le feu des canons autrichiens.
Comme quoi, on apprend beaucoup de choses en arpentant le monde.

J'en avais déjà vu un similaire à Paris dans le quartier du Marais à l'hôtel de Sens portant la date du 28 juillet 1830.
