Approaching Le Cyclop on foot (reached after a short forest walk of about ten minutes), one hears strange noises such as sounds of pots and pans, metallic leaves vibrating in the wind, or other sounds that set the mood. Of course, this is intentional and managed automatically.
And suddenly, there, before us, stands the unexpected. A monster 22.50 meters high and weighing 350 tons of steel. Its name: Le Cyclop. This monumental sculptural work, which stands in the heart of Bois des Pauvres in Milly-la-Forêt (in the Fontainebleau forest), was born from a shared dream of the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely and his friend and compatriot Bernhard Luginbühl.
Le Cyclop asserts itself from the outset with its metallic and modular structure, which makes it a characteristic place for sharing and exchanging with other artists. Niki de Saint Phalle, Eva Aeppli, Arman, César, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Pierre Raynaud, Jesús Rafael Soto, Rico Weber, Larry Rivers, Seppi Imhof, Philippe Bouveret, and Pierre Marie Lejeune have thus created works for the site and participated in this colossal adventure, which developed from 1969 to 1994.

En approchant à pied du Cyclop (on l'atteint après une petite marche forestière d'une dizaine de minutes) l'on entend des bruits étranges tels, des sons de casseroles, des feuilles métalliques vibrant au gré du vent ou bien d'autres sons qui vous mettent dans l'ambiance. Bien entendu cela est voulu et géré automatiquement.
Et soudain, là, devant nous, se dresse l'inattendu. Un monstre de 22,50 mètres de haut et 350 tonnes d'acier. Son nom : le Cyclop.
Cette œuvre sculpturale monumentale qui trône au milieu du bois des Pauvres à Milly-la-Forêt (en forêt de Fontainebleau) est née d'un rêve partagé de l'artiste suisse Jean Tinguely et de son ami et compatriote Bernhard Luginbühl.
Le Cyclop s'affirme dès l'origine avec sa structure métallique et modulable qui en fait sa caractéristique comme un lieu de partage et d'échanges avec d'autres artistes.
Niki de Saint Phalle, Eva Aeppli, Arman, César, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Pierre Raynaud, Jesús Rafael Soto, Rico Weber, Larry Rivers, Seppi Imhof, Philippe Bouveret et Pierre Marie Lejeune ont ainsi créé des œuvres pour le lieu et participé à cette aventure colossale, qui s'est développée de 1969 à 1994.
This 350-ton behemoth, credited to Jean Tinguely, was inaugurated by François Mitterrand in 1994. One can clearly see the single eye (well... it's a cyclops) and the protruding tongue through which water flows.
