Light Painting at the excavator

in PhotoFeed2 years ago

Bucket wheel excavator 1452

What a monster! This thing is 75 metres long, 48 metres wide, 33 metres high and weighs 1940 tonnes. When @gunnarheilmann, Danilo, Marlene, Matti, Dominic and I arrived, we were overwhelmed by the size. My second thought: how do I get the monster in the picture and, above all, how do I get enough light on this huge technical monument?

Danilo was our model in this picture. First I tried to create as much steam as possible behind Danilo, not so easy with wind force 8. At the same time I shone the orange 🔦 Convoy S2+ towards the camera. Then @gunnarheilmann and I simultaneously illuminated the excavator with the light blue 🔦 Convoy S2+. During the entire exposure, two RGB lamps previously placed there by Dominic shone in the driver's cab.

Our Matti also runs rail vehicles in real life, so he was perfect as a model for this picture. In the driver's cab I had placed an RGB lamp, again in red. I first lit Matti, then Marlene and then the locomotive with the DIY Light Scanner. In the last step, I ran a small firework volcano along the rail. As the burning time was quite short, we had to repeat the picture twice. I almost started sweating because I had to run so fast.

Fireworks are always cool. Even if the picture is not a masterpiece, it's always fun. Here I put myself in the picture and burnt off a big Roman candle.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The artist illuminates the scene with diverse light sources and paints light traces into the picture with various light tools. In addition, we use various other techniques, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All our pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, our pictures are not processed on the computer.
