Every year since 1856, the small and melancholic town of Santa Rosa, dresses up to bid farewell to its Patron Saint, the Divine Shepherdess (Divina Pastora, in spanish), whose image made of polychrome wood three centuries ago in Seville, travels on the shoulders of the parishioners a distance of a little more than 7 kilometers to reach the Metropolitan Cathedral of the city of Barquisimeto.
This event, which was interrupted in 2021 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is considered the third largest Marian procession in the world, behind the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico and the Virgin of Fatima in Portugal.
After receiving the New Year, the image whose dimensions are similar to those of a human being, is taken down from a niche located in the middle part of the altar to be exposed to the sight of the thousands of visitors who come to the village in the days before the procession, as is the case of these photos I took in January, a week before its departure.
Cada año desde 1856, el pequeño y melancólico poblado de Santa Rosa, se viste de gala para despedir a su Santa Patrona, la Divina Pastora, cuya imagen elaborada en madera policromada hace 3 siglos atrás en Sevilla, recorre en hombros de los feligreses una distancia un poco mayor a los 7 kilómetros hasta llegar a la Catedral Metropolitana de la ciudad de Barquisimeto.
Este evento, que se vió interrumpido en los años 2021 y 2022 por la pandemia de Covid-19, es considerada la tercera mayor procesión Mariana del mundo, por detrás de las correspondientes a las de las Vírgenes de Guadalupe en México y la de Fátima en Portugal.
Luego de recibir el Nuevo Año y en sus primeros días, la imagen cuyas dimensiones son similares a las de un ser humano, es bajada de un nicho situado en la parte media del altar para ser expuesta a la vista de los miles de visitantes que acuden hasta el poblado en los días previos a la procesión, como es el caso de estas fotos que tomé en Enero de año, una semana antes de su partida.
