Hello ladies and gentlemen of hive. Here is my post for this week and edition contest on how I am going to describe what a smartphone is for someone from the 60's. Keep reading

During the 60's, I doubt if there is anything called a phone, let alone a smart phone 😄. I remember the time I realized something called phone was introduced in my country was even in the 2000's. It did not even start as a smart phone. It was just to make calls and text messages.

Nit everyone could afford it then. People came up with the business idea of setting up a phone booth, where you bring the phone number of the person you want to call to the booth, then dial to speak with them.

In my country then, they charge N20 per minute. It was useful and saved a lot of issues then.

The phones then, to me, lacks aesthetic, they look so big and sturdy with antenna compared to the designs we have now.

Technology advanced, newer models then now come in better designs and colorful screen light display, because the older models just had either white, green or blue screenlight or backlight as they would call it.

The functions on the later phones upgraded from just making calls with it to having bluetooth to share and transfer files, then media player where you can listen to music, radio and camera.

Later, these phones were integrated with more functions and designs. There was an open and close design, a sliding design and the buttoned design then the latest one of the touch or screen touch design which is the most common and newest design in this century.

Now let us discuss what a smart phone is. I don't want to jump straight to smart phones without touching a bit on the history of phones. I have to take it from the oldest to the latest. So here we go.

Smart phones like I said earlier are integrated or a well developed version of cellular phones that can perform wide range of functions to make digital activities easier and in our proxy.

It has been developed to a point that it can connect to internet services for users to be able to access information's on websites. In the olden days, people go to computer centers or cyber cafe as it is popularly known for, to access the internets on computers.

But now with a smart phone, you have a computer in your hands. Think of what a computer can do, your smart phone can do it as well.

Smart phones are so versatile now that they keep users, friends, families, businesses connected with applications like emails i.e electronic messaging, video calls, social media e.g Instagram, whatsapp, Facebook, LinkedIn e.t.c. All these apps and more have made day to day activities easier. I do not have to go to a cyber cafe before I can access the internet.

The main thing in my opinion that made a cellular phone to be called a smart phone is the possession of an operating system. It is because of the operating system that makes applications that are necessary for users activities.

These operating systems are of two types, we have AOS (Android operating system) and IOS ( iPhone Operating system). They are similar but with their differences. They have different versions of app that can run on them. Aos version of app cannot run on Ios version of application.

This is what smart phones have that makes it different from olden days kind of phones.
