Facing Nyctophobia

in Hive Learners28 days ago

Telling myself always that facing my fears will help me overcome certain situations has been a great game changer. If you do not face your fears then you will continue to be in the dark and keep living with the mindset that you have a phobia for something which could limit you in certain areas. I am always of the opinion that everyone has fears. It could be fear of water, fear of crowds and so many more.

The best thing to do to overcome what you fear is to face it. If you do not face your fear then there is no way you are ready to overcome your fear and stop limiting yourself.

If there is one thing I had then it is Nyctophobia which is the extreme fear of darkness. Most people love dark places. Some people will prefer to sleep in the dark and can not sleep if the light is on. Well, I wasn’t those people. I had a severe fear of darkness. Whenever it is nighttime, if there is no power supply, I try to turn on my torchlight or my phone light.

I couldn’t sleep without light and I wouldn’t enter a dark place, I always had my lights on. My friends already knew the kind of person I was so whenever I came to sleep over, they tried to keep the light on since I was scared of the dark and I couldn’t stay in a dark place.

Well, I realized how discomforting this was for my friends if there happened to be any sleepover, they always kept the light on for me. I couldn’t stay in a dark place. In a way, I felt embarrassed and I needed to face my fears.
The first night I decided to sleep in darkness and turn off my light, it wasn’t up to 30 minutes I turned on my lights again because I was so scared of the dark and kept having thoughts of something terrible happening.

I had to force myself and I started with 30 minutes of staying in the dark to 1 hour of staying in the dark and I kept increasing it as the days went by because I needed to face my fear and stop being scared of the dark as nothing was going to happen. It took a while before I finally adapted to staying in the dark and then I could stay in the dark without having dark thoughts.

After I was done facing my fears, I spent the night at my friend's place and she was shocked when I told her “I now sleep in the dark”. Well, she didn’t believe it until I turned off the light myself and I finally stayed without going back to turn it on.

I try to avoid anything that will give me scary thoughts like horror movies which will bring back the effect of me not being able to stay in the dark. This way I tend to keep my mind intact and stay in a dark room without me running out or turning on my lights. Fears are limiting and the best thing is to erase them from our mindset

I'm inspired by your journey of overcoming nyctophobia. It takes courage to confront our fears, especially something as deep as a fear of darkness.

I love how gradual you took in facing your fear head-on and that gradually approach led to your adaptability. I'm happy you overcame it because someone like me I love sleeping with the lights off and I can't imagine sharing nights with someone that can't cope with that.

My utmost pleasure.

You had real friends, and some friends would not allow that no matter what, I know that thirty minutes were hard but you needed it to conquer the fear glad you conquered it and even exceeded the time.

You are right, 30 minutes felt so long even. Thank you for stopping by

Well that is noted, I wonder if dark thoughts still flow when the light vanishes!

Oh it does when I see a scary movie😂😂

Hehe then I shall remember that!

Great idea that you worked on. If you did that when you were young then I must applaud your maturity in finding such a solution. I agree about not watching Horror. I appreciate why it is thrilling for many people, but if it is actively going to make life difficult later why even entertain it.

Great post. Cheers from a fellow #dreemerforlife

Facing Our Fears and trying to overcome them is quite a good thing to do

Welcome 🤗

I like how you conquered your fears by facing them one step at a time. And again, recognising the triggers and avoiding them (in this case horror movies). Great Post.

Thank you so much ☺️☺️

I'm sorry I felt that way for you. I'm glad you're doing better now. And yeah, do stay away from any horror or extreme psychological thrillers.✨

Thank you so much Jhymi☺️☺️

The best thing to do to overcome what you fear is to face it. If you do not face your fear then there is no way you are ready to overcome your fear and stop limiting yourself.

This is just the secret. Running away from your fears will make it continue to linger but making conscious like you did to fight it is the best way to overcome.

I also used to be afraid of the dark when I was younger, but then my mum told me one time that it is easier for something bad to happen in the night if there's light than when there's no light because anyone can easily see your exact location and your state when the light is on. But when the light is off they will also be afraid cause they don't know the state of your room or your exact location. From then I was no longer afraid of the dark anymore. But then I don't even pay attention to whether there's light or not when I want to sleep 😅.

It's great to see you face your fears. It shows you're strong 💪🏾

I was told that too, especially how easy it will be for them to rob someone when there is light.
