Predestined

One thing that I believe in, which seems valid, is that whatever path that we choose is what is meant to serve our highest good. I'm aware that certain situations that one might find themselves in life might seem unfair. Sometimes people feel unfortunate, and they might want to question, "Why me?" And like the counter saying goes, why not you? I mean, if it's not you, who else right?

Well, taking several trips down memory lane, it becomes clear that my life today is a reflection of the several journeys embarked on. The most significant of these journeys was through the university.

It should be worth noting that at the time I was applying for admission to several universities of choice, I did get two offers and missed one. The first offer was from a state-owned university while the second offer was a private Uni I had applied for much later after the first.

Quite unfortunately that my attention was only drawn to the letter of acceptance from the first uni much later while the offer for provisional admission had elapsed. Honestly, there wasn't much that I could do, as I had already started at another university, which was privately owned.

When I broke the news of my admission with the state to my parents, they had wanted me to forfeit my admission at the private uni and go for the state. My father had hoped to pull some strings to get me started; but then when I told them that the course I was offered to study was Urhobo and Linguistics, my parents both yelled, "God forbid," lol. The reason being that Urhobo is not among the major dialects or tribe in Nigeria, and as such, studying it will limit my opportunities or chances at being employed.

Thus, I remained at the private university, and honestly, sometimes I do wonder how much difference my life would have made if I had dropped out from the private university and chosen the state owned. You see, these particular feeling of uncertainty became worse when I saw a post from a young man who relocated abroad on scholarships. An opportunity he got via his area of discipline, which was Igbo and linguistics.

Looking at the young man's story, you could say that we had a similar case but then I forfeited my admission and took the option that I felt would serve me more and honestly seeing how my life turned out, I have no regrets because you see the option of Uni that I chose and even the course read, it made me who I have become.

It is clear that we all have our predestined path and even if I had gone to study the Urhobo, I really wouldn't even have the mind to be a publisher or researcher like the guy who studied Igbo. Basically because I had no deep sitted passion for writing, and I also do not know anything concerning the Urhobo language despite it being my mother's tongue.

When doing a close comparison with the other guy whose discipline landed him a scholarship in America, I saw that what worked for him won't have worked for me because unlike me, he's passionate about his tribe being Igbo. I mean this guy has written novels, mathematics and physics textbooks all in Igbo language. Little wonder how he was able to secure his scholarship because he's indeed a scholar.

Well there's me whose more on the administrative side and technically there isn't much that Urhobo and Linguistic would have done for me as an area of discipline. Not even the advantage of a state owned uni over private would have scaled me through. Indeed life is basically our passions, channeled in a direction of hope and purpose.

Your parent’s reaction to your admission is funny. The young man was truly an inspiration.
