One thing that really baffles me to this day is how little people rate the effects of a good walk. Having a good stroll usually helps clear the mind of all the fog that has gathered up, giving space for cleaner and more positive thoughts to take root. This is because when you take a walk, it’s not really about the destination, it’s about the journey itself.
It’s about how you get from point A to point B, and then back to point A. It’s about the things you see, the feel of the evening breeze on your skin, the smell of dinner hanging in the air around every home that you walk past. The sound of cars speeding past. You’re in the moment, and that’s all that matters.

The thing is, many times, people confuse strolling with trekking. If wherever you’re going is time-based, and it’s stressful, then you’re simply trekking. No sane person takes a stroll in the hot sun, you also don’t stroll when you’re physically tired or stressed out. You’ll simply be punishing yourself for no reason. Stroll has to be random, the weather also has to be good for it. The only thing that should be on your mind is enjoying the thrill of being able to get out there and just walk.
I’ve always been a huge fan of strolls. Back when I was younger, my Mom obviously couldn’t just let me take strolls, so most of the time, I kept some errands until late evening, and then used the errand as an excuse to go on a stroll. If the shop I was meant to go to was opposite my house, I’d simply leave it and go to another that was further down. Many times, in another street entirely. Sometimes, I’d just go to the major road, watching the cars as they drove by.

And now, have I changed? Hell no! Now that I’m a remote worker, I even need it more. There are days when I won’t even step foot outside my house because I'm too busy with work. And in the evening, I take a stroll. Other times, when I want to buy petrol, I purposely go beyond my usual stop just to enjoy the peace of the evening. There are periods where I’ve spent more than an hour just walking.
Taking strolls is important, not just because of their fitness benefits, but because they give you an opportunity to let go of everything that’s on your mind. On a good stroll, you shouldn’t be thinking about work, or bills, or whatever stressors you're dealing with. It should just be you, your feet, and the long stretch of road under the evening sky. By the time you get home, you do it with a clearer mind, and you’ll be able to go at it in a different way.
This has always worked out for me, and it’s something I’ll always advise. But then, if your neighborhood isn’t safe, especially at night, then maybe doing the stroll in your compound will be safer for you. Because taking a stroll in a neighborhood where you have to keep looking over your shoulders as you're scared for your life would totally defeat the purpose of the entire thing.
So please, take a stroll today.
