So, Mr. Kema, can you swim? Lol! When I think about swimming, I see it as one of the necessities that I’ve not been seeing as necessary for a very long time now. And it’s not even like I’ve not been in water before, I’ve been there multiple times. I’ve been to pools dozens of times over the course of my life, especially during my secondary school days when I was a regular visitor there. And of course, making a visit to the pool meant getting into the pool.
It was later on when I grew older that I realized that the latter didn’t have to happen because of the former. I didn’t have to swim just because I was at the pool. And thus, many times, I’ve been to the poolside and I just chill and relax, not even stepping a toe in the water. The last time I was in such a place was September (I think) when I had a poolside hangout. I didn’t even get into the water.
The thing is, besides pools, do I have much experience with large bodies of water? Sadly, no. I’ve been to the beach only a handful of times, it would have been more if getting to those places wasn’t so damn hard and stressful! The furthest I’ve dared to go on a beach is just to wade into the water until it’s up to my waist. Even then, the waves were so strong I felt it was going to pull me away. So, I ran for my life.
Other than that, I’ve not really had much experience with large bodies of water. Most of them are usually when I’m on a bridge, passing over it. From the River Niger to the Atlantic Ocean, I only see them through the panes of the window of the vehicles I’m driving in. Rivers and Lakes, nah… I’ve not been to such.
So, what am I saying? Do I know how to swim? Nah… I’ve not taken out the time to actually learn the skill. All the time I went to the pool, I didn’t swim per se, but I was in the water. I was one of those who just chilled by the side, taking the occasional dunk. Life wasn’t too hard. But get this, theoretically, I know how to swim. I know how to do my strokes, and I know how to coordinate myself when underwater. I’ve looked into it, I’ve done my research, and watched countless tutorial videos of it. If there were certificates for the study, I would have had three of them by now.
But still, despite all the learning I’ve done, I’ve not even tried to put it into practice. In September, when I had the hangout, I didn’t even dare to enter the water. I guess this is one of those situations where I’m obsessed with preparations that it’s stopping me from actually starting. So, if something were to happen now and I found myself in water, would I be able to swim to safety?
Theoretically, yes! I should be able to. But practically… will I be able to think straight enough to remember everything I’ve learned? I just hope I don’t get to find out. But this topic has reminded me of something important, to simply just do something. I’ve put this off for way too long. I guess it’s time to actually try swimming and not just learn how to do it. I’ll also take a pro with me, so that if practicing the theories I learned fails, there’ll be someone who will save me.
