There’s a reason they say that one should never speak ill of the dead. Not because of any spiritual or supernatural implication, but simply because no matter what it is you say, the dead would never be able to defend themselves from your claim. You can accuse a dead man of all the worst things in the world, but as long as he’s not alive to defend it, whatever you say goes. You could be telling the truth, or you could simply be lying. But no one can tell for sure, because yours is the only version that’s available.
And this is just how it is with history. History is not always told from a genuine point of view; it’s usually told with an agenda in mind and a message to be passed. There always has to be something told from a particular piece of history, and that is a technique that’s employed even today. People tell stories based on what they want people to know instead of what actually happened. Because that way, they could dictate how the people react to it.
Even right now, history is unfolding right before our eyes. On the global stage, we have this war between Israel and Gaza, and also Trump stepping in. History will have it that Trump was able to stop the war from escalating; the Israeli leaders and those from Gaza will also be featured prominently. But do you know the people who won’t even be mentioned? The actual victims of this massacre. The civilians who have lost their lives due to the lust for power of their leaders. And this falls on both sides of the war.
Think of the mother who watched her family get blown to pieces by bombs, or the low-ranking soldier who had to go into a war he didn’t understand simply because he was ordered to do so. Think about everyone directly affected by the war, then you’ll know that you’ll get a different version of history from the one being told. But these people will never make it to history, they’re just numbers and statistics. The names you’ll see are those of individuals who were safe and snug in bunkers while they ordered missiles on unarmed cities and towns. That’s how history gets made.
And that’s also how it is here in my country. History is told and twisted to serve propaganda. None of it is ever really intended to serve knowledge. They’re always trying to get you to do something they want. That’s why it’s so crazy. And many times, we do it even without knowing it. Many times, when you speak to certain people about history, they tend to speak in favor of themselves and their people. While they might not technically lie, they can be sure to overexaggerate.
So then, is there a piece of history I think is wrong but everyone else sees right? Hell yeah! I’ve always wondered how crazy it is for someone to think that the River Niger was ‘discovered’. Like, how the hell was something that was already being used by the indigenous people of the land discovered by some stranger? This is something that I’ll never really understand. Like, this alleged discovery was made by Mungo Park, and he went on to write a book about it that got really popular.
And thus, that’s how history can be as well. Many times, the loudest voices always end up being the only voices heard. Someone can choose to believe a quack over you who has the required skill simply because the person is more confident and more outspoken. Hell, even if they’re spewing nonsense, people will still believe them just because they’re doing it confidently.
So, I’m not really a huge fan of history, because I know that most of the time, it’s simply just a tool for propaganda. And that’s why many times, history repeats itself and we never really learn from it as a species because we never really get the full story. We only get half of it, the version of the victor. And eventually, we find ourselves barreling right back to the very place that history had warned us about.
Well, what can we do? We’re all in one big crazy world!

That's right, my friend, we shouldn't badmouth people who have died, let alone accuse them of things they haven't definitely done, because they will never be able to come back to defend themselves from our accusations. In our teachings, we are advised to think well of people who have died.

I find this very relatable because I have same kind of mentality. The way you explain history as a tool for propaganda it's eye opening.
