In this day and age, it can be easy for anyone to consider that the degree they spent so much money and time to get is obsolete. Especially when you end up working in an establishment that has nothing to do with what you studied. These days, we have engineering graduates working in banks, political scientists working as clerks in hotels, medical doctors working as videographers… hell, even lawyers are working as land agents!

But then, what does this all mean? Is the degree still worth it? Seeing as it always ends up in a box, gathering dust with other forgotten documents. Do we still need to send our kids to universities? What is the point if they’re only going to end up doing something else?

The thing is, I don’t think degrees can ever get obsolete. Yeah, I mentioned how an engineering graduate is working at a bank, but to get that job, they had to submit a degree certificate. As a matter of fact, the barest minimum to get a decent enough job in Nigeria is having a degree. Without it, you’re going to be getting jobs that would make you want to puke. The job market is not favorable to those who don’t have their degrees, and it shows in the gross pay disparity.

I studied engineering, but I’m a writer and content creator. That’s by choice though, because I’m yet to get my certificate (still waiting to go for NYSC). Since I’m doing something totally different from what I studied, does that mean that I’m getting it wrong? No. I, for one, do not regret going to the higher institution, and I can’t ever think that the certificate I got from them will be obsolete.

Besides the learning I got and the academic teachings, I also got to meet a lot of great people. I found Hive when I was in school, and I started writing professionally when I was in school. School life brought out the hustler in me, and it forced me to look inward to start looking for money. It made me take charge of my life and do things for myself. And I’ve been doing just that all this while now.

I guess that in the end, everything is subjective. Because this is a country where jobs are not given on merit but on connections. You could be the best student of your set, you could be the brightest mind of your generation. But every company you go to will reject you simply because they want one of their own in that office. And then, as a desperate act, you begin to apply even to companies where you have nothing to do with them. At least any win is a win.

And that’s why you get someone who graduated from Fisheries being a supervisor in a hotel, or a computer science student going on to become a secretary. Well then, it is what it is. I don’t think I can ever consider going to school to be not worth it. Maybe the end result might not be all that fulfilling, but the growth and learning that come to you along the way make it worthwhile. The person you are as a fresher should never be the person you are as a graduate. If that’s the case, then something is definitely wrong.

But if you look at both people and compare, then you’d know that indeed, school is still very much worth it.

Yes!!! Although the country might not worth it, but the truth Is that no matter what, Education it very Important. Just that some countries way and value to Education makes it look less important and valued.

The discipline we choose has a way of giving us more opportunities and reason to believe that education worth it... Most Disciplines like Medical Practitioner.

Uhhuh... education is very important. Just too bad that our system doesn't seem to place value on it anymore.

I also don't think it's good to do a job that is different from the study for which we made efforts. It is kind of wasting the earned knowledge as the knowledge may not be useful in other field. But what can we do. We need money to survive and so we can't care too much about it. As long as we get a job we need to go for it even if it's not related to our department.

Exactly... if you keep waiting for jobs in your field, you might end up waiting forever, so many just make do with whatever is available.
