I have seen a lot of deepfakes on the internet, but I never knew that was the name, but seeing it as the theme for this week's content, I have to read the meaning of the word. I will not lie; technology is really advancing day by day.
When it comes to spreading fake information, I give it all to deepfake. Most times I ask myself how AI is able to do the magic they do. Deepfake uses an individual face and passes pseudo, and the voice is totally different from the person most times. I am afraid of the way technology is going because if one doesn’t take time, the deepfake will put someone in a problem because you will see yourself doing things or saying something you never spoke.
Deepfakes have really made things complicated because I don’t even know when news is real and when it is fake. A lot of people have been scammed and blackmailed. This just reminds me of my friend that should have spent the rest of her life in a cell. Someone framed her with a deepfake app, accusing her of what she didn’t say. The video was so real that you would not think twice about the video. She was not even given the opportunity to defend herself because her face is in the video, and everything about the video was so real. I don’t think there is anything that scares me now like the deepfake app because everything about it is so real. It pains me that people use this app negatively; in most cases it is used to impersonate individuals, which is bad, and we neglect the good aspect of deepfake.
I don’t really think that deepfake is the problem we are facing, but the people using it negatively are. Humans will always find a way to misuse things, and at the end, people will only talk of the bad part and not the good part.
How can it be used for a good act?
We have this mindset that deepfake is capable of ruining life, and we fail to look at the advantages of deepfake, which will be of help to humans. For instance, in the area of our education system, it will really help improve our education system; it will create historical images. Histories are converted to videos for people to watch and learn. It will make the education system fun and interesting. It can be made in a way that the historical figures are the ones speaking to students; that will be amazing. There is this feeling that it gives that you are watching a historical figure and not reading from a history book or someone acting like the person.
It can also help people with disabilities by helping them to generate sign language and also help to translate different languages in virtual form. I have watched many videos that is being translated intoare many languages so that people will understand because it is not everyone that understands English.
Deepfake is dangerous, but it also has good potential and benefits if it is properly used by humans.
