Popularity is a word that is popular on its own. It’s the degree of how well known a person is in a particular place. Popularity is not subjected to one thing. It can be seen in different contexts, like entertainment, sports, school, politics, social media, and so on. Gaining popularity in school is what most students want and this comes in different ways. It might be through social skills, physical attractiveness, academic achievement, athletic ability, and so on. Some gained their popularity through being talented in a particular field, outspokenness, being friendly, dancing, singing and more

Known in my first year

I’m not a person that talks much and I hardly associate with strangers. We can get along over time but not immediately we meet. I didn't talk to people in the class when I first joined the school. I just greet, take my seat and when I’m through for the day, I get out. Many students tagged me as a gentle kid. But the truth is “I’m not gentle at all”. I just watch before associating with people

One day, the need for class governor arose and I took the lead. I talked in the class extensively and people were surprised. I was forced to be the class governor which I declined because of my plans that aren't yet known to anyone. I selected another person to take my place and supported him as the assistance class governor. That was when I started gaining popularity. I’m the assistant but doing the work of the leader. I was known within the department alone until I represented them in a school competition that announced me throughout the school. I couldn’t help but have many friends from all the departments in the school. They invite me to party almost every weekend. They just want me to show my face

I don’t see myself as a celebrity because there are faces of the campus, miss this and miss that. But I’m always honored among students. What later spontaneously altered my popularity was when I came out to vie for a post in the faculty and SUG. I became more popular. I won, and fought for the students. I can never forget the day I sent the SUG president out of a meeting we were having with the school authority because he compromised our effort by taking side with the school management on matters that would affect the whole students. After the meeting, the school management said that they are happy that I’m not the SUG president and that I would have caused more ALUTA in the school.

And after that meeting, truly, I called for ALUTA. I addressed the students and went for a protest. No violence, but the school must yield to our cry. Alas! They danced to our tone. Presidents from all departments and their excos recognize me. The students too know my shadow. I believe that it was the ALUTA CONTINUA that gave me more visibility

Being popular makes one feel wanted and loved by many. It gives a sense of belonging and self-esteem. It can help to get things done easily without going through stress, and one is presented with opportunities and access to social network and resources

On the other hand, popularity in school can be stressful at times. The problem of being popular in school is that many people will like to come close to you. You begin to have different peers and groups and if not careful can be engaged in things that don't fit into one’s lifestyle. Popularity can also make people envy you, feel resentment, and jealousy and it can also create a sense of competition among students

Conclusion

Popularity is cool. It’s nice, lovely and very desirable but still challenging at some points. I was strictly invigilated in my exams because I stood up against the school management. I had to do things diplomatically to allow them to make me graduate without any extra year. I earned one of the best results in my department and was glad, but if not that I have a strong mind and dedication, it wouldn’t have been easy. What really kept me going was the love from the students. They were awesome. I didn’t have a good relationship with the SUG president because I’m always against his decisions that wouldn’t favor the students. He’s powerful but the support from the students makes me super powerful than he could imagine. Fighting for the right course as a leader is what I cannot let go. I'm still active because it's a part of me. It will always reflect every where I go.

So you were engaged in politics, very cool! I guess that is a good quality! Social disparities need people like that to fight for them.

Yea @gwagnberg. I did politics. It's always cool to fight for the right course, but people will always fight you back if you are always wrecking their plans. Thanks for the comment.

Truly, I'm reasonably sure I won't suffer the people. I will make sure I do the right thing and also live a good life too. No one wan suffer. That was what I did back then at school. I handled lots of contracts, made money for myself and still fought for the students. It's a win win boss. Only the greedy ones think only of their pocket.
