It is becoming extremely definitely pinpoint what is real or fake in this world especially when the source happens to be from a social media platform. Things keep getting worse since the very creation of the deepfake technology which so happens to be a product of artificial intelligence. According to Chatgbt, Deepfake technology is a form of artificial intelligence (AI) that is used to create highly realistic but fake images, videos, or audio recordings by imitating a real person’s appearance, voice, or actions. It works by training computer models often using deep learning algorithms on large amounts of real data such as photos, videos, or voice samples of a person. Once trained, the system can generate new content that looks or sounds convincingly real, even though it never actually happened.

In the wrong hands deepfake technology can be used to deceive the public with unrealistic events, things that never happened, fake news and even creating videos of people saying things they never did in real life. Not too long ago I watched a video of a popular Nigerian Musician by the name of Davido telling his fans how much of a terrible artist he was, how is rival Wizkid is way better than him and how he should have listened to Wizkid first before he released his recent album which was a horrible piece of work. At first I thought the video was authentic because it had no error whatsoever until I decided to look at it from another angel. Davido will never agree that Wizkid was better than him or his art was trash. That was when I realized this was a deepfake video and the crazy part is a lot of people actually believed this monstrosity and the dangers that follows if things like are allowed to roam unregulated.

The limitless threat that deepfakes poses to society can never be overemphasized. Fake videos can be used for blackmailing, ruining people's lives, spreading false information and misleading propaganda in political affairs, creating distrust which ends up scarring people for life. With a technology like this, the concept of "seeing is believing" becomes obsolete because even the information one sees with their own two eyes is received with doubt and scepticism requiring rigorous scrutiny before it is accepted or just point blank rejected completely since it is becoming extremely difficult to seperate reality from fakers. Nevertheless, it would be unwise to completely shutdown the usefulness of deepfake technology by tagging it as tool for vices and ignoring it's contribution towards societal growth when it is guides in the right direction.

As an individual who has always been fascinated by important historical events, deepfake can help enhance educational sector in terms of history. Thanks to this tool students can freely interact with historically important people getting information from them, by watching it all unravel right in front of them thus keeping them completely absorbed in ways even books or even movies can't without in anyway destroying their reputation.

Personally, I think the most important positive contribution of this tool to society is "Memory preservation" and I'll use a real life situation to explain. I have been out of touch with my friend for over 6 months now and just yesterday our paths crossed coincidentally. He looked pale which pushed me to ask if everything was ok, he wasn't. Apparently he lost his dad a few weeks ago and still hasn't gotten over the fact that he'll never see his favourite parent again going as far as telling me that he'll do anything just to hear his father's voice even if it is fake. This is where deepfake shines brightest, with the help of this tool we he can just upload a video or voice record of his dad with instructions of what he wants and the app will just handle the rest. This might not heal the wound in his heart but at the very least it will help make his loss bearable and if that is not a win for modern day tech, then I wonder what is.

Just like every other tool, it is safe to say that deepfake technology can neither be regarded as a symbol of good or evil, it is simply just a product of humanity which falls primarily on how it is used. It was simply created for the purpose of serving human needs/wants so the the best thing to do is regulate its usage so that it is not largely exploited for the wrong reasons.

THANK YOU

It's incredibly frightening and dangerous how realistic fake content can look on social media, and how people are misusing deepfakes. However, I appreciate that the article also reminds us that technology itself isn't inherently bad. It all depends on how it's used. In the right hands, it can bring about significant positive change in society.

What you mention in the story is incredible; it would be so much fun to see it.

I like your conclusion, it was invented for to serve a purpose and the usage should be regulated and if possible shouldn't be made accessible to everyone, so it doesn't get used wrongly.

The problem of it not being accessible to everyone will definitely be a problem because some folks who want use it for a just cause might not pass the eligibility test 😔
