Friendship and Meeting
Javed is my college friend. Our interests are similar, and that is why our friendship has lasted long.
It was about last evening when I planned to meet this friend of mine. So, I reached his new office where he is the head of the engineering department in a large private university.
When I entered his room, he was saying to a student,
“Son, to become a good engineer, you don’t just need a degree; you need a sense of responsibility. The bridges you build, the buildings you construct, they must have quality. Otherwise, millions of lives could be in danger, and the full responsibility will be on your shoulders.”
I looked at my friend with admiration, and after the student left, I said,
“Wow, Javed, you were teaching the lesson of responsibility to the students very well.”
Javed smiled and said,
“Yes, this is our responsibility.”
دوستی اور ملاقات
جاوید میرا کالج کا دوست ہے، ہمارے شوق ملتے ہیں، اس لیے ہماری دوستی نے بھی خوب طول کھینچا۔
کل شام کی بات ہے، میں نے اپنے اس دوست سے ملنے کا پروگرام بنایا، چنانچہ ان کے نئے دفتر میں جا پہنچا، جہاں وہ ایک بڑی پرائیویٹ یونیورسٹی میں شعبہ انجینئرنگ کے سربراہ ہیں۔
میں جب ان کے کمرے میں داخل ہوا تو وہ ایک طالبعلم سے کہہ رہے تھے:
"بیٹا، ایک اچھا انجینئر بننے کے لیے صرف ڈگری نہیں، ذمہ داری کا احساس چاہیے۔ تم جو پل بناو گے، عمارتیں تعمیر کرو گے، ان میں معیار ہونا چاہیے۔ ورنہ لاکھوں لوگوں کی جانیں خطرے میں پڑ سکتی ہیں۔ اور اس کی مکمل ذمہ داری تمہاری گردن پہ ہوگی۔"
میں نے ستائش بھری نظروں سے اپنے دوست کو دیکھا، اور طالبعلم کے جانے کے بعد کہا:
"ارے واہ میاں جاوید! آپ تو طلبہ کو ذمہ داری کا یہ سبق بہت اچھے طریقے سے سکھا رہے تھے۔"
جاوید مسکرائے:
"جی ہاں، یہی تو ہماری ذمہ داری ہے۔"
The Tale of Two Faces
Just then, his phone rang. From the conversation, it seemed to be about the repair of the university building.
I was surprised to hear my friend saying,
“Oh man, just break the plaster and redo it. The old pipes can still be used. No one is going to notice anyway. Save the money and make sure the billing looks strong, got it?”
After hanging up the phone, seeing the astonishment on my face, he said,
“What are you looking at? This is practical life. We teach ethics to students, but we have to manage our household expenses too, right? So we just have to make it work somehow.”
دو چہروں کی کہانی
اتنے میں ان کا فون بجا۔ بات چیت سے لگ رہا تھا کہ یونیورسٹی کی عمارت کی مرمت کا معاملہ تھا۔
میں نے حیرت سے سنا کہ میرا دوست کہہ رہا تھا:
"ارے بھئی، بس پلستر توڑ کر دوبارہ کرنا ہے۔ پرانے پائپ بھی استعمال ہو سکتے ہیں۔ کوئی دیکھے گا بھی تو نہیں۔ بچت کرو بھئی بچت، اور بلنگ مضبوط کرانا، سمجھ رہے ہو ناں۔۔۔!"
فون رکھتے ہی میری حیران نظروں کا مشاہدہ کرتے ہوئے وہ بولے:
"کیا دیکھ رہے ہو۔۔؟ یہ عملی زندگی ہے۔ طلبہ کو تو ہم اخلاقیات پڑھاتے ہیں، مگر ہمیں تو گھر کا دال دلیہ کرنا ہے ناں، سو یونہی 'کام' چلانا پڑتا ہے۔۔"
The Face of Contradiction
Hearing this, I fell into deep thought.
Isn’t this the very contradiction that is hollowing out the foundations of our society?
We teach the best values in classrooms but forget them in practical life.
The real question is, do we actually understand the meaning of social responsibility?
Or is it just a chapter in the syllabus that we teach students but never practice ourselves?
تضاد کا چہرہ
یہ سن کر میں سوچ میں پڑ گیا۔
کیا یہی وہ تضاد نہیں جو ہمارے معاشرے کی بنیادوں کو کھوکھلا کر رہا ہے۔۔؟
ہم درس گاہوں میں تو بہترین اقدار سکھاتے ہیں مگر عملی زندگی میں خود انہیں بھول جاتے ہیں۔
سوچنے کی بات یہ ہے کہ کیا ہم واقعی معاشرتی ذمہ داریوں کا مطلب سمجھتے ہیں۔۔؟
یا یہ محض نصاب کا ایک باب ہے جسے ہم طلبہ کو پڑھا تو دیتے ہیں مگر خود اس پر عمل نہیں کرتے۔۔؟
Dreams and Reality
We talk about ideals and master plans for the world,
while we cannot even manage the micro plan of our own lives.
I was thinking, isn’t this our collective mental state?
We dream big, we make grand plans,
but we ignore responsibility in our daily small actions.
And we do it so boldly.
خواب اور حقیقت
دنیا کے لیے ہم "آئیڈیل" اور "ماسٹر پلان" کی بات کر رہے ہوتے ہیں،
جبکہ اپنی ذات اور نجی زندگی کا "مائیکرو پلان" تک سنبھال نہیں سکتے۔
میں سوچ رہا تھا کہ کیا یہی ہماری اجتماعی ذہنی کیفیت نہیں۔۔۔؟
ہم بڑے بڑے خواب دیکھتے ہیں، عظیم سے عظیم تر منصوبے بناتے ہیں،
مگر اپنے روزمرہ کے چھوٹے چھوٹے افعال کی ذمہ داری سے چشم پوشی کر جاتے ہیں۔
اور بڑے دھڑلے سے کرتے ہیں۔
The Recognition of Character
The question is, are we really socially responsible citizens?
Or just performers who talk big but fail to act?
The truth is, our character is hidden in our small actions.
Only that teacher is a true educator who not only teaches textbook lessons but also imparts lessons for practical life.
Only that businessman is great who, along with earning profit, guarantees quality for his customer.
And only that doctor is a true healer who gives not just medicine but attention and compassion.
Otherwise, with apologies, all these professions are just a deception,
on which we do whitewashing,
put the most beautiful labels,
wear clean and bright uniforms and clothes,
and yet, our very being gives off a stench.
کردار کی پہچان
سوال یہ ہے کہ کیا ہم واقعی معاشرتی ذمہ دار شہری ہیں۔۔؟
یا محض ڈرامے باز، جو بڑی بڑی باتیں تو کرتے ہیں مگر عمل کی دنیا میں۔۔۔؟
حقیقت تو یہ ہے کہ ہمارا کردار ہمارے چھوٹے چھوٹے افعال میں چھپا ہوتا ہے۔
فقط وہی استاد حقیقی استاذ ہے، جو کلاس روم میں طلبہ کو صرف کتابی باتیں نہیں پڑھاتا بلکہ عملی زندگی کے اسباق سکھاتا ہے۔
وہی تاجر عظیم ہے جو اپنا منافع کمانے کے ساتھ ساتھ کسٹمر کو معیار کی ضمانت بھی دیتا ہے۔
بس وہی ڈاکٹر مسیحا ہے، جو مریض کو صرف دوا نہیں دیتا بلکہ توجہ اور ہمدردی بھی دیتا ہے۔
ورنہ معذرت کے ساتھ، یہ سارے پیشے گورکھ دھندہ ہیں،
جن پر ہم لیپا پوتی کرتے ہیں،
خوبصورت سے خوبصورت لیبل لگاتے ہیں،
شفاف اور اجلے یونیفارم اور لباس پہنتے ہیں،
اور اصل میں ہمارا وجود سڑاند مار رہا ہوتا ہے۔
Society, a Mirror
Remember, society is a big mirror.
It only shows us what we put into it.
If today we throw filth into this mirror,
then tomorrow we will have to read the dirty reflection ourselves.
معاشرہ: ایک آئینہ
یاد رکھیے، معاشرہ ایک بڑا آئینہ ہے۔
یہ ہمیں وہی دکھاتا ہے جو ہم اس میں ڈالتے ہیں۔
اگر آج ہم نے اس آئینے میں غلاظتیں پھینکی ہیں،
تو کل ہمیں ہی اس کی گندی عکس بیتی پڑھنی پڑے گی۔
Beginning of Reform
So what should we do?
Start with yourself.
From today, from this very moment, make a promise that you will be that person in your street, your office, your class, who is good not for show, but from the heart.
Do not treat your responsibility as a burden,
make it your duty and your habit.
آغازِ اصلاح
تو پھر کیا کریں۔۔۔؟
شروع اپنے آپ سے کریں۔
آج سے، اسی وقت سے، اسی لمحے سے، یہ عہد کریں کہ آپ اپنی گلی میں، اپنے دفتر میں، اپنی کلاس میں "وہ" شخص بنیں گے جو صرف دکھاوے کے لیے نہیں، بلکہ دل سے اچھا ہے۔
اپنی ذمہ داری کو متھے لگی مجبوری نہ سمجھیں،
اسے اپنا ایک فریضہ اور شیوہ بنا لیں۔
The Two Forms of Death
Because the truth is, there are two forms of death,
Real death,
Apparent or ruling death.
In real death, the whole world sheds tears at our passing,
and apparent death is when our inner self dies,
when we pretend to live,
but that life is only an act.
Our inner human dies the moment we turn away from our responsibilities.
موت کی دو صورتیں
کیونکہ حقیقت تو یہ ہے کہ،
موت کی دو صورتیں ہیں:
حقیقی موت،
حکمی موت۔
حقیقی موت میں ساری دنیا ہمارے انتقال پہ آنسو بہاتی ہے،
اور حکمی موت ہمارا اندر کا مر جانا ہے،
جس میں ہم یہ دکھاوا کر رہے ہوتے ہیں کہ ہم بھی جی رہے ہیں،
لیکن وہ جینا صرف ڈرامہ کرنا ہوتا ہے۔
ہمارے اندر کا انسان تو وہیں مر جاتا ہے جہاں وہ اپنی ذمہ داریوں سے منہ موڑ لیتا ہے۔
