Will I Support Self-Driving Cars?

in Hive Learners23 days ago (edited)

All thanks to technology, different inventions keep coming up every day. Just when you feel like you have seen it all, another amazing thing is created.

There are different cars out there: automatic and manual. Once upon a time, manual cars were the lead; people felt that was the best thing that had happened to transportation. Then, automatic cars came and changed the narrative.

It made driving easy and enjoyable. I have a friend who has never learned how to drive in any driving school. He only learned how to drive theoretically, but the very first time he entered an automatic car, he drove it.

And from that day on, he has been driving to date. I don't know a lot about cars and driving, but I feel that automatic cars gave a lot of people the privilege to drive due to how easy they are to control.

Now, it's not about automatic cars that need someone to control the steering; it's about self-driving cars.

Cars that need little to no human effort to navigate the road and reach destinations. This is not a small achievement.

The stress of driving is completely rolled away; one only needs to set the location and watch the car take them to that destination.

However, we know that everything that has an advantage comes with disadvantages.

The truth is, I have never seen a self-driving car before. I only hear of them from people, or watch them on TV and as much as I admire them and commend the effort of technology for that level of creativity, I don't think I can totally support self-driving cars.

In a place like Nigeria, driving such a car is a big risk. Imagine the traffic and how crazy Nigerian drivers are. What kind of calculation would you do to make the car avoid all the drama on the road?

I can only accept to drive such a car if there is a provision for manual ride too, if not, count me out.

Come to think of it, do I even need a self-driving car? Since I have hands and I can think, and see the road, I think it's best I drive myself.

In a situation where the car has an accident, ideally, the company is to blame, but it doesn't sound logical that way.

We are humans; we ought to know that nothing is without a chance of failing. So, anyone riding in such a car should be prepared for anything.

Even cars that are driven by people who are well-experienced in driving have accidents. Is it a programmed car that would be exempted?

In the end, we just have to apply caution and also ensure that we open our eyes wide to monitor the car while it's moving.

Self-driving cars are good, but as I said earlier, it's not something I would support. Apart from being scared that it may not fit the roads in my country, I also fear that if it fits the road, it's going to take away jobs from a lot of people who are professional drivers. Imagine how joblessness and poverty would spike if that happens.

To be honest, why will I need a self driving car, when I have hands and head to think.
Just imagine, enjoying your self driving car in the busy road of Naija😅, that seems extremely scary to me 😅.
