Iron deficiency is among the most common nutritional deficiency in the world according to World Health Organisation(WHO). It is common among children and pregnant women, this nutrient deficiency is widely spread in developed countries. Anemia is as result of iron deficiency making it difficult for your red blood cells to deliver enough oxygen. 18mg is the recommended daily value of iron intake.

List of foods high in iron

  1. Spinach: 100 grams of raw spinach contains 2.7 mg of iron, which is 15% of the recommended daily value, it is good source of iron.

  2. Liver and other organ meats
    This includes kidneys, liver,brain, and heart. This organ meats are highly nutritious and are high in iron. 100-gram serving of beef liver contains 6.5mg of iron and which is 36% of the daily value.

  3. Legumes

Legumes are filled with nutrients. We have beans, lentils, chickpeas, and soyabeans. They are also a great source of iron. 198 grams of cooked lentils contains 6.6 mg of iron, which is 37% of what is recommended daily. According to USA Agricultural Department, chickpeas provide 3.7 mg of iron per cup, which make them a good source of iron.

  1. Shellfish
    These includes clams, oysters and mussels, it is also a good source of iron, 100- gram serving of clams contains up to 3 mg of iron, which is 17% of the recommended daily value. According to the USA Department of Agriculture, five raw oysters deliver 3.23 mg of iron, making it a good source of iron.
