The Actual Price Of Surrogacy...

in Hive Learnerslast month

Surrogacy is quite a complicated childbearing option from my point of view and somehow, that process of bringing kids to the world doesn't fully sit well with me. Yet, I believe it's a pathway to parenthood for people with severe health conditions preventing them from having their babies naturally.

For me, I actually don't like the process but if there is need for it, I wouldn't say no as long as it would be done legally plus there would be a proper documentation of agreement to prevent any form of exploitation in the future. It would be selfish of me or anyone to condemn the process knowing very well that it's the only option left for some people to become parent.

I've read several testimonies of how adopting surrogacy have saved many marriages and brought happiness to different homes so to an extent, it's a great thing but at the same time, we can't overlook the ethical concerns and risk associated with surrogacy which includes exploitation and objectification of the human body.

In the last few years, I have read stories about security agencies discovering baby factories used for surrogacy. Women are deceived and forced into being part of the process and it's a terrible thing involving them without their consent or the right compensation. Aside from the unjust treatment surrogates experience, there are women who have made it an illegal source of making money which shouldn't be so. I know this isn't much of an issue yet but with time, I wouldn't be surprised to see people taking up being a surrogate as a profession.

I was in a bus some months ago when two ladies were chatting about someone who was into surrogacy. I think they advised the person to have her on kids before going further but the she refused and they are worried she might hurt herself in the process. Logically, a medical practitioner is involved in this illegal work but they choose to be quiet since they are making money too.

Just like that lady, there are so many people who have taken this as a source of earning without putting their well-being in consideration. They believe they can't earn such substantial money from doing other things so surrogacy is an option since it pays well.

The unequal power dynamics between the intended parents and surrogates is another thing that gives me concerns because it can become an issue for the child later in life.

I've seen stories of surrogates showing up all of a sudden causing emotional and psychologically disturbance for kids that have no idea of how they came to this world. I know quite well that there are different contracts attached to this surrogacy of a thing. Some give privileges to surrogates to meet their kids in the future while its the opposite in some cases but how many people feel good about their kids knowing or meeting the woman who actually carried them in the belly.

Automatically, many of these kids will develop an emotional attachment to these people which might cause issues within the family if care is not taken.

Due to illiteracy and other reasons, some surrogates do not even know what the contract says and when they request to see their kids, it becomes a problem while there are those who understand the contract and still blackmail their clients just to exploit them.

It's the joy of every parent to have their kids but doing it illegally at the expense of someone's well-being shouldn't be allowed. Extorting and exploitation shouldn't be condone as well so it's time the governments make laws that would ensure the end of illegal surrogacy across the world.
