Like my grandma used to say before she passed away, “You cannot do life all by yourself; you need one or two people in your circle, those you trust with your heart.” She said that in Yorùbá, which made a lot of sense to me as time went on.
At a point in my life, I said to myself that I do not need a friend because I can do it by myself and that as long as I trust in God, do my things, and stay in my lane, everything will be perfectly okay, not knowing that I was just deceiving myself and that life was laughing at me.

I could sometimes remember around the second quarter of this year that I made a very huge financial mistake, which resulted in some loss; the thoughts going through my mind then felt so heavy that I can ever imagine. But thank God for good friends around who motivated me, and looking at this prompt made me realize that, just like my grandma also said, I cannot survive this world alone by my own capacity but also by those loyal friends who are always there when everything seems to be going down the drain.
For me, I have also come to realize that having someone I call my friend does not necessarily mean those who turn up for my parties, but those who take cognizance of if I am okay or not, those who will look at me in the eyes and tell me that, Dave, this thing you are doing is wrong. I remember my childhood friend Ife, who always checks up on me and has always been there for me, most especially when I was down. She always comes with different foods just to make sure that I am eating. Sometimes, we barely say a word to each other, but when she is around, the atmosphere is always bright.
Where I am from, we attach different meanings to friendship. Is it the sharing of our goals together and motivating each other, or the street hangout and eating roadside suya by the Aboki man? Or the late-night calls just to check up on each other after a long, busy week, or the support we give to one another during our downtime.

And to answer this prompt question, with all my experience, I have realized that being happy does not come from the place of friendship, but it starts with us, that inner peace we have, because it is possible to have Aliko Dangote, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, or all the powerful and influential people, but if I do not have that inner peace, I cannot be genuinely happy in that friendship. The friends we have only add the bling to our life but cannot fill that void in us.
They said it is lonely at the top, just like a life that has no friends in it, but it doesn't mean such a life has no hope because before we begin to look for friendship, we must firstly find that friendship in ourselves, accepting who we are, being kind to ourselves, and loving the person who we are before we can extend those things to others.
Having a genuine friendship goes beyond having loads of friends to having those who know our importance, who see the tears in our eyes even when we laugh. Because when we understand one another as friends, everything seems easy. But when it seems otherwise, we can stand alone on our feet.

I like the way you connect your grandmother's advice with the idea of friendship and self-knowledge. It conveys a sense of lived wisdom without over-romanticizing. The part about inner peace before friendships was well-placed; it adds a touch of balance and maturity.
