There are times when we are so tired and don't wish to go to work, but we do not have health reasons to keep us away or any real reason for that matter just that we are not feeling upto the task at that particular point in time. At these times, if an emergency holiday or free day is announced, we have an immediate mood booster.
Earlier this year in my country, a lot of holidays occured at the right time. Either Thursday and Friday or Monday and Tuesday. The good thing about such holiday is how they are joined with the weekend thereby affording you enough freedom from work.
Although in my line of work, a public holiday is no guarantee that you will not be on call or that ur critical patient will not require your attention. You may find yourself doing more work on a public holiday than even on a regular week day.
I think there a good number of holidays in Nigeria, however, I would appreciate if more of them occured within every month and not just having it all jam-packed in a particular month or two. This is because in the past 3 or 4 months, I don't think there has been any holiday. I look forward to weekends but sadly, the weekend quickly flies round and Monday comes so soon. And so does the struggles come too, no rest for the boy.
Too much Holiday does not appeal to me as something that would affect the economy. This is because I strongly believe that the problem of Nigeria is not about the laziness of Nigerians but it is rather a leadership error. Given the right policies and the right government I know that the economy will quickly go back to a positive state. The problem of the economy is from the mismanagement of funds and resources by political office holders.
They go about politicking with even the most important things in our lives which is not fair.
As if that is not enough, they make it seem like we are the problem. When in fact, we are just pawns in their own game.
I am not saying that everyday should be holiday because I believe that all play and no work makes Jack a dull boy. Rather I feel that there should be one or two holidays a month so as to allow workers to take breaks and rest a little. That way it becomes easier to avoid burnout and fatigue. It also affords the individual extra time to pursue extra engagements that may be favourable for his financial growth.
