In 2009, Barcelona made history by lifting the Club World Cup as they won all six possible titles in 2009/10 season. What makes it all the more incredible is that this was Pep Guardiola’s first calendar year in charge at Barcelona.
Barcelona is the first team in the histoy of football to win six trophies in one calendar year. The first trophy of the year was the La Liga, in the eyes of many, the 2-6 demolition of Madrid in El Clasico in May of that year is seen as its crowning moment. Their 2nd trophy came on May 13th as they crushed Athletic Bilbao by 4-1. The third trophy of the year was Champions League, where they won by 2-0 against the mighty Manchester United.
They said Messi couldn’t head, but how wrong they were. Slipping off Rio Ferdinand at the back post, the Flea, as he was once nicknamed, rose in the area to put the last nail in Manchester United’s coffin in a 2-0 final win at the Stadio Olimpico where Samuel Eto’o scored the opener.
Barcelona’s 4th trophy was European Super Cup against Shakhtar Donestk. Meeting their UCL group foes from the previous season in Monaco, Barcelona laboured to a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donestk. They won their 5th trophy by pipping Athletic Bilbao 1-2 in San Mames. Barcelona ended their best ever year by winning the Club World cup for the first time.
Only Bayern Munich managed to win six trophies in one calendar year since Barcelona did it back in 2009.
