Past and Present Disparities

I remember my year one in the university; one of our courses had this old means of communication. We were reminded of the ancient ways to relay messages and the modes of communication used in the Stone Age and how they were able to understand each other.

One good thing about being a student back then is the sense of togetherness and familiarity. In terms of communication, we were taught interpersonal communication, which is a face-to-face conversation between two persons. This was much more prevalent among students of the past than it is now. I can boldly say that there are students who never communicated with each other from year one till they graduated.

Students back in the days depended on this interpersonal communication, and they spent quality time together. This kind of communication fosters strong bonds that go beyond the academic years. My mom usually tells me stories of her schoolmates while she was in secondary school and how her friendship with them is still intact.

Everything is different now; students building strong communication among fellow mates is now a forbidden thing. With the advent of technology, everyone prefers being glued to their phones rather than connecting with others. We prefer online conversations to interpersonal, which doesn't promote strong connections at all.

One disadvantage of being a student back then was limited learning resources. Not having access to instructive learning resources impaired learning in the past. Unlike then, there are lots of free materials available for easy learning right now. One can easily access information with his or her smartphone and data at the comfort of his or her home without being asked to pay. Back then, students depended on few resources like textbooks, libraries, and classroom learning alone.

These books were even costly, and the same goes for the library, which means not even all the students could afford these materials. I don't know much, but I don't think we can count ten old libraries to say these were old libraries used to enhance learning in the past. The students of this age have free access to the internet, giving full access to lots of information. Without going to the library, you can access online information. This improvement in the educational system has replaced the past.

To balance these disparities, it is important to bring in activities that foster face-to-face communication and togetherness. Organizing extracurricular activities like group work and pairing students for group discussion can promote interpersonal communication. I remember when we were given group work to do, we were eight in each group. It won't be a shock to hear that we never met from the first day till the day we submitted the hard copy of the work. Everything was discussed online and this doesn't promote strong bond and friendship.

There was no face-to-face interaction. So, while assigning group works is important, having someone to monitor if the aim of what was given has been achieved is also crucial. When we do something because we want to achieve a result, and at the end, we don't achieve what we wanted to achieve, it simply means we have not done anything.

Interpersonal communication, I remember this course. Did you study mass communication?

In the aspect of lack of interpersonal communication among the students of nowadays, it is due to large numbers of students in a class. During the old days we had fewer students in class, so which made it easier for everyone to know each other.

Secondly, as a result of insecurity every student is just trying to protect themselves by not getting too close to strangers because you don't know who is who.

Did you study mass communication?

Yeah, I studied that. Although we call it Communication Arts.

Apart from the crowd, although that is also a factor but I know departments that promote interpersonal communication and it's really effective and you can feel that sense of familiarity and collaboration.

For sure learning access improved! I remember my classes only with chalk board that made me sneeze and when I used to go to the library all the time to do school assignments hehe

Hahahah, all those are now things of the past as the Internet is now at everyone's fingertips

It's intriguing how the ease of access to information has transformed learning, yet at the cost of diminishing the richness of face-to-face interactions that once fostered deeper bonds.
