Would Students Thrive Without Grades?

Education they say is the key to success and education has grown over the years to become an integral part of our lives. Gone were they days when education wasn’t taken that seriously in my part of the world but today, everyone is educated to some extent no matter how little. It’s actually good to see how far we have come as a country and a continent at large in terms of education even thought I know there is still more to do. This at least is a step I towards the right direction.

I have been in the educational system from the very beginning. I started schooling even before the school age then because my parents were busy and so they decided to take me to school. I’d say it was a good call because I was able to get that solid foundation which has led me here today. Back then, primary school was very competitive because everyone wanted to top the class. Thanks to my inherited intelligence, I didn’t need to fight to be at the top of the food chain. I was always up there- I don’t mean to brag but I have to.😂

The grading system then was just basic math. I could single handlers grade my entire class because the grades were based on our exam score and continuous assessment. Honestly, the entire educational system is that way now. But the good thing is, this grading system helped us assess ourselves by knowing our strengths and weaknesses so as to know where we need to do something polishing.

Fast forward to high school, it was equally ver competitive with the same grading system and a large number as compared to primary school. For me, I didn’t really care much about the grading in high school like I didn’t in primary. My goal in high school was to pass my final exams. I didn’t care much about class competition and all even though I knew it was something people were battling for but no on spoke about.

University was more about real life and real world. There was nothing like fires in class or second in class. Your results are between you and your portal. When you don’t study and see the bad grades in your portal, you know to sit up and when you pass because you put in the work, you know it was worth it. When it comes to the grading system, I am of the view that the grading system during my primary school days was somehow a good thing then- but now things have changed. It’s still competitive in but these days anything can happen. In this era of technology, some students will go as far as cheating or even paying their way to the top of the class which will at the end of the day not even be worth it when they step into the outside world.

The grading system for me is okay because we use both the A-F and also the actual marks so you can know you mark and the grade it corresponds to. What I think could be worked on is the result distribution. If there could be a portal for all students where they could asses their grades and have some privacy, it would be best because some students may have issues and might not be able to deal with the stereotype and all. The way, only the teachers know which students need to put in more effort and make sure to drive them to the right direction instead of making their fall backs general knowledge. This topic however is a subjective one and this are my thoughts on it.

I don't think grades reflect a student's true potential. However, they are one of the most effective ways to show whether a student is doing well or poorly in a particular subject.

Well said!

The grading system is also very okay for me, it just pushes students to do better if they want good grades.

Based on the details of grades we got, some of us were able to make good decisions about our career path. For anyone with low score in math or anything that has to do with calculation, he/she would start thinking of other areas with less math. Now imagine if the only visible grade is average, we will never know how good or bad we are at specific subjects.
