Leveling Up In 2023 || Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals For Myself

in Hive Learnerslast year (edited)

Raise your hand if you have set goals before and didn't follow through on them. I believe many of us would, especially myself. I am so good at it that you could just call me the "General Do-It-Later." It's not a good thing, but hey, we're trying to be positive here, so let's keep that face away for now.

What I'm here to do is set yet another set of goals, the goal of which is to bet better in the new year. You know how it is with setting goals so quickly and how everybody likes to make "new year's resolutions." It looks like a chance to reset one's life, when in reality it is just the calendar starting all over.

Somehow, however, I waltzed into 2022 with zero goals and no direction, and guess how that turned out for me. Well, think no further, as the straight-up answer is "awesome." Or what were you thinking? that I'll say "terrible?" Come one, give me some hope to be optimistic about these new goals. I don't want to be too hard on myself, even though we both know the actual truth.

At the same time, setting goals and achieving them are two distinct areas of expertise, with the majority excelling in the former. And at the end of the day, it takes more than a pen on paper to realize goals; it takes willpower and determination.

Even if things happen along the way and some of our plans fall through the cracks, it's safe to say that goals provide some sort of direction towards where one would like to see themselves after a certain period of time. And for this reason, I am coming up with certain goals in hopes of improving certain areas of my life.

Fortunately, the Med-Hive community encouraged me to think about this before putting together this article—or should I say journal? I shared them in this post, but in summary, I intend to sleep better, eat better, and get back to hitting the gym.

IMG_20221230_130044.png

I am aiming to sleep for an average of 8 hours every day. This equates to 2880 hours out of a total of 8760 hours in a year. That's one-third of the year spent sleeping. It does sound strange to know that I am going to spend four months out of twelve sleeping through the year. However, if I stick with it, I will have a better chance of being more productive all year.

Eating better is part of the goal; however, it is a little difficult to be more definitive on "how much better" it is that I would like to eat. The cost of feeding over here inflates every day, and so it may heavily affect my plans. In all, I intend to be more intentional with how I fuel my body. I'll devise cost-effective, flexible plans.

  • ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟ ᴅᴇᴠᴇʟᴏᴘᴍᴇɴᴛ

I am not much of a reader, and this is mostly because I get really lazy with reading. However, I have come to understand how much power lies within the pages of books. So therefore, I intend to read books this year. And since I am not much of a reader yet, I am sticking with one book per month.

png_20221230_123729_0000.png

I have a couple of books lined up, probably for ages now, and then I have newer suggestions from friends. And so for the month of January, I am looking to finish the book by Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People. And for the next month, it'll be Atomic Habits by James Clear, and so on. I'll share more details about this plan soon enough.

  • ᴄᴀʀᴇᴇʀ ᴅᴇᴠᴇʟᴏᴘᴍᴇɴᴛ

At this point in my life, I am careerless, and I'll be graduating from the university in 2023. I have no particular thing going now, as I have fallen by the wayside a lot throughout the year. But I know that I would like to do something in tech.

20221230_125457_0000.png

This area is a little bit blurry at the moment, but there are two main things I am considering. I am looking into learning a programming language for real this time, and I'll be starting with Python. The other would be getting into the tech itself, so I enrolled in an online school for programming in January. It is to last for 12 months.

The goal is to learn and master using Python as a programming language and complete the training I enrolled for.

  • ɴᴇᴛᴡᴏʀᴋɪɴɢ

You see, I have met a lot of amazing people just this year. The majority of them are on Hive, but I have a good number of them off Hive too. And in my experience, good friends are super important. So this year, I am going to build a much stronger network for myself.

3_20221230_132105_0002.png

It's a little vague on how I want to do that exactly, but I am looking to get bigger with virtual spaces and communities, particularly Hive. This would involve building networks with more and more people.

  • ғɪɴᴀɴᴄɪᴀʟ sᴇᴄᴜʀɪᴛʏ

In 2022, I learned the hard way the importance of ensuring financial sustainability. And now, in 2023, I am looking to change the narrative.

My only source of income at the moment is Hive. Hive, as a matter of fact, is my first actual source of income. I am going to build some "emergency funds" this year, and Hive is largely going to sponsor that.

I will get a job at some point in this new year. And that is why I am looking forward to learning new skills, honing them, and then deploying myself into the labor market. But for now, it'll just be Hive.

I already had one building up, but due to some "emergencies," I had to take them all out. I am going to start again, and I am going to have 300 HBD saved by the end of the year.

  • ʜɪᴠᴇ ɢᴏᴀʟs

I already set some goals in October for where I wanted my account to be one year after I made my introduction post. In that post, I had certain goals to meet by the 19th of April, 2023. However, since we are looking long-term. I have new ones to reach by the end of this year.

2_20221230_132016_0001.png

I currently have 66 rep. And I am aiming to have a reputation score of 71 by the end of the year 2023. It will come by only hardword and dedication, but I am willing.

The next on the line is building my HP. I am currently at 965 HP. I am going to have 3000 HP stacked by the end of the year 2023; that's doubling up my efforts in 2022. And it will only come by posting regularly, which I am pumped to do in this new year.

My engagement dropped massively in the last quarter of 2022, and it hasn't been healthy for me on Hive. I am picking back up, and although I haven't made so many comments in the last couple months (about 3500), I am determined to show up every day and make 20 comments on 20 unique posts every day. This would be the base for engagement, which will definitely raise the numbers.

There will be really good days, and there will be days when I may not be able to show up much, but the goal is to have made 20,000 comments by the end of the year. It'll all be healthy for my account in the long run.

image.png

I prefer to make pretty simple goals now because, in the past, I have set too high standards for myself and ended up not achieving them in the end. These goals I have set for the new year may be small, but they will be the foundation for building the direction I need to get to where I desire to be at the end of the year.

Goals are meant to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). And mine are not exactly so, but since I'll be working on them and journaling them, it'll all take a better shape as I go.

Very nice and realistic goals. Seeing how you entered 2022 without much of a goal and now you have a list of things you want to achieve in 2023 is growth. I'm looking forward to seeing you smash all of these. And now that it is out here in the public it would give you more push and make you more accountable..hopefully.

Happy New Year 🎊🎆

 last year

Oh, thank you.

And yeah, I'd rather surpass them in the end and be able to move on to the next, rather than making them unrealistic in the first place and then jettison the goal.

I am looking forward to smashing those goals as well, so I can make myself proud: I need that.

Happy New Year, T-baby.

Human are fund of making plan without following it up
Sometimes I don't want to get too serious about my plan

Because it is when am serious I don't get to achieve the plan but I do make some of it though majority of it I won't because am always careless are keeping to my plan

 last year

There are two sides to a plan; making it and then accomplishing it. However, there is a big gap between both, and it takes will and determination to make that leap to cross from the former to the latter.

I think being "not too serious" with a plan in the first place has an underlying effect of inhibiting one from achieving it.

It may be because the plans are unrealistic that humans will not achieve them eventually. Realistic goals are the ones that are within our potentials and capabilities.

Nice goals bro, I think it's best to set goals that it's not hard. This year I set some goals that I couldn't achieve any during the first quarter of the year. so I changed the goals in April so that I won't waste the whole year, and I'm excited that I was able to achieve some.

Wish you all the best in your goals bro

 last year

That's the thing about setting really hard goals. I mean, it's all nice and looks good to set them, but it's a whole different thing when it come to achieving them. In the end, it can be really disappointing to fail to reach them. This is why I do really simple and short goals now.

It's a good thing you reset you goals and went for something more achievable. Now, you get to move on to more and bigger things little by little.

See you at the top, man.

You sure do set yourself some goals, my friend.

I'm tired after reading them :)

I hope you make having fun one of them! Don't forget to play in all of this (preferably Chess, with me please 😈)

It's a good idea, really. I'm going to take some inspiration from this and set some myself for a change. 👍

 last year

I'm tired after reading them :)

😂 I'm not exactly sure what that means, but I really am looking to improving in this new year.

And yeah, having fun is part of the whole plan. I wouldn't want to regret not doing certain things in the end. Chess is part of the list too. I am going to get back on chess, study and practicing again. We really should play some chess together. I'll come to your WA

I read your post on "discovering oneself." Super insighful...I am still gathering my words as I am pondering over them. You said power things - you always do.

:D

We will do it all and have fun as we go.

Happy almost 2023, my angel. It's gonna be a good year. 💥👍🏼

It can be challenging to follow through on goals, but with determination and perseverance, I have no doubt that you will be able to achieve what you set out to do. Best of luck with your personal development, health and wellness, and career development goals.

 last year

That's the thing. Determination and perseverance don't come easy as they are said. I just know that "showing up everyday" will do me a great deal in achieving my goals; I have to be willing first.

Thank you for your contribution and kind words.

You're welcome @olujay

 last year

you are definitely determined to smash many goals next year, love this! and i wish you best of luck and i believe you can do it as long as you are dedicated to achieving those goals, giving up is not an option🙂

 last year

I really am ohh...I am not cool with where I am now, so I am willing to take myself to where I need to be, no matter what.

It will not be easy, but I am going to be dedicated to showing up everyday to draw nearer to my goals. Giving up is not even an option.

I am even making roadmaps (strategies) on how I'd like to get there. And I'll be sharing some of them on Hive - for accountability.

awesome my man, happy new year!❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️🎈🎉🎉🎈👯‍♂️🥂

That’s the problem I have faced each time I set goals. So in the long run I have realised that to even set a goal you have to look at how much you earn to be able to reach that goal.

Imagine I earn 1 dollar vote per post and I set my goal of hp to be around 10000 hive by the end of the year. That will sound really stupid cause I won’t be able to achieve even quarter of this.

So I like the point of setting small and realistic goals.

Prioritising your sleep is really smart. I’ve tried doing that but it seems my body is used to not sleeping early. If I do sleep early I will wake up very early. But I hope yours can work.

 last year

Man, I so love your analogy. You nailed it!

That's one mistake we humans make when we are setting goals. We don't assess our capabiliies before setting heights to leap. And it some times can be dangerous. I have done this severally and mostly failed. This is why I am taking the optimal route; going after small but steady growths.

At this time, I am really struggling to nail the "sleeping adequately." And it is because I am like you; sleeping isn't much of my thing to do. But then again, I am willing to try.

 last year

Yep the small goals are much achievable and I think it’s those ones we should even appreciate more cause it prepares us for the bigger goals.

When I sleep early for long the sleep is not just enough. But when I sleep a little I feel more energetic.

Since you're about to read more next year, you should be checking out Hive book club contest, where you can share about the book you want to read in 2023!

 last year

Oh, yes. I am about to read more in next year. And it's funny that I didn't even think about the Hive Book club contest.

I will go on to check about the community, the contest and its rules, and how I can share my journey there.
Thank you!

With the current price of Hive, 3000 HP is very possible.

Also, I have started reading Atomic Habits. I read it first thing in the morning when I wake up and read a chapter a day. That way, I am not rushing myself and maintaining an easy pace.

 last year

I first thought 3000 HP may be a little far-fetched, but then, I reached 100o HP in about eight months without much deliberate effort. Surely, and with the current price of HIVE, I should attain 3000 HP by the end of next year, and then maybe I will chase after yours in the next year...XD.

I like your approach to reading Atomic Habits by James Clear. I read only two chapter and dropped it. Soon enough, you'd be done and unto the next.
