Traditional marriage ceremony of Eggon People in Nasarawa state

in Hive Learners2 years ago (edited)
Good day my lovely family of Hive learners community, for week2 episode 2 we where asked to write how traditional marriage is been done in our various ethnicities. I am happy to come in with my entry because I am favored by this particular week's episode unlike the first episode which we where asked to write about a festival that holds in our country that is unique only to our people, which I had no idea of any because I haven't experienced any which left me clueless to the topic.

I am from Nasarawa state and Eggon by tribe. In My tribe, maximum attention is actually given to traditional weddings and to be frank it doesn't used to be easy for the bride's family because of the heavy duties required of him to carry out before he is given the bride's hand in marriage. First of all there's going to be a first visit where the groom will have to come and show himself to the family of the bride, they'll have to know he is the person going out with their daughter before they can proceed to come and collect the list of items they're to provide for the traditional marriage which is basically done by the groom's family and the bride's family..

The list usually comprises of the items below

  1. Clothes Boxes for the bride
  2. Beer and palm wine
  3. Some money for the bride's parents
  4. Provision of yards for the the bride's parents
And the most prominent one is the 12 Basins of cooked big beans mixed with grinded black beni-seed and a lot of pock meat.

Infact this is even the traditional marriage to me because the cost of providing this basins of beans is a bit exhuberant and requires alot of funds. But as we're approaching the Modern age alot of things are changing now, those basins of beans can be negotiated now, because alot of people run away from Eggon girls because of this. The groom's family are given opportunity to lay their complains which they can plead for reduction of these goods to be produced. If they've drown to conclusions about the items to be provided in the list they can further fix a date for the traditional marriage. On the traditional marriage day, the bride and groom dress up in our native dress which they'll further exercise some traditional rights.

The bride's parents will bless their daughter and the marriage and gifts will be given out to the couples to be. The bride and groom will feed each other in people's present as an act of Love, the various parents will all make their speeches advicing the newly couple's.

I am a fan of beans already I don't know maybe the tribal blood is flowing through my veins but all I can tell is that I really love beans so much both the white common beans we all know and the big beans for my tribe. The problem with my traditional food (mixed big beans with black beni-seed) is that it quickly runs one's stomach, it doesn't welcome anyhow combination, infact it's preferable to me I eat only the beans and drink ordinary table water than drinking any other type of drink because any slightest combination that is not welcomed will cause you some uncomfortability.
So far so good the problems encountered in our traditional marriage is that when the beans that is brought is not shared among everybody that is supposed to partake in it, mostly the relatives, there use to be various kinds of problems encountered by the couples. My tribal people are very good at that, they will use their diabolic powers on you, it sometimes happens like that.
You know this popular saying about "village people" lols, some of them because of envy they can gang up against your progress, but I believe that works for who believe it will work for him/her.

Thanks for sharing in this wonderful gist about my tradition and how marriage is been done.
