On today's episode of “We don't know how dangerous things are until they go sideways,” we had woken up this morning due to a loud noise we had heard down the street. When I went out to investigate, it turned out the police were trying to drag a young man and force him into their bus, while the young man was screaming at the top of his voice, asking for anyone and everyone to help him.
On further investigation, I found out what happened. It turned out that the young man happens to be the person in charge of his hostel gate, meaning he's the one who's in charge of opening the gate in the morning and locking it at night. And last night, they had gotten robbed at their lodge after he had apparently locked the gate, so either he was working with the thieves or something else had happened.
Watching him get dragged away made me feel like that could have been me a couple of years ago because for a while, I used to be the one in charge of my hotel's gate too, and I will remember how people would often leave the back gate open at night, even after I had locked it.
While knowing full well that someone could easily jump over the hostel fence and gain access to the hostel from the back gate. And if that had happened, no one would have admitted to them being guilty of leaving the gate open, and I probably would have been the one screaming for help while getting dragged into the police van.
To be honest, it's crazy how we don't think about how bad certain situations can be before deciding to do it, probably because if we do think about it, we might end up not doing a lot of things in life because they all do have an advantage one way or the other.
Luckily for me, I stopped before the bad side of it happened.
Just imagine what kind of dangerous responsibility you were taking care of a couple of years ago.
