Some people can be rich and still not want to show off or impress others while some may decide to lay low with their rich status as they would be pretending they have nothing. If you ask them for help, they won't render, they will keep giving excuses. Once you find out who they are and what they have in their possession, it makes you feel bad knowing someone can be so mean like this. Most people believe being rich is the end and they won't go back to how they used to be with their attitudes to people, little did they know the tables can turn around someday, making them lose all they have acquired while the other person's life turns great with wealth. Then, they will start seeking help and if you are one kind of a good person, you won't try to pay back evil with evil.
There is this particular lady I still remember today and would smile because of the kind of person she is. She is an example of a rich low-key and humble individual. Those not close to her like me wouldn't know at first but it would leave you in shock that such a person is rich yet decide to stay humble and not show off or try to impress. We attended the same church and this brought more closeness to us during my NCE programme. She was a degree student as at then and stayed a street after mine, but she would always come to my hostel to play and gist with me and others. She is older than me, and so, I called her "Sister mi" meaning my sister and she would always smile and call me "Aburo mi" meaning my junior sister. Everyone would always talk about how humble and respectful she is and this made me move closer to her. I never knew she is someone with wealth around her. According to people, she doesn't like people coming to visit her at home except two of her closest friends. Perhaps she also told them to keep her profile low and never tell anyone.
She is someone who would always volunteer to help people pay any necessary bills once she is part of those contributing to anything. Many times, she would visit my hostel and give everyone #500 each for recharge cards, but seeing how she dresses, no one would think of her as a rich lady in her department. She loves to help people, in the hostels and at church.
One day, I heard a noise outside, thought it was the usual student fight and I decided to go feed my eyes with what was going on. My vicinity was a noisy one with different people bringing up unnecessary issues every day just to fight and embarrass themselves. This made me leave what I was doing to check the latest news. Getting outside the gate, I saw lots of students who had surrounded a beautiful red car and when I moved closer, it was this lady. People were hailing her and she just couldn't move away as she continued to express herself that it was God who did it for her. Everyone refused to let her move without dropping something for them and I was shocked when I heard she gave out #50k for them to share among themselves. That was when I started wondering what kind of person she is. Is she a rich fellow? #50k just like that?
Later in the evening, I heard some people wanted to visit her home as she planned a small party to celebrate her new car. I went with them too since she is someone I know and wouldn't be sending me out if I showed up. When I got there, I couldn't close my mouth seeing how furnished her room was. She had three bedrooms flat and one of the rooms had been occupied with bags and shoes. One would think she was selling them, yet, she never dresses flamboyantly but in a moderate manner. She saw me, smiled and gave me #5000 that day. Well, I collected it knowing I needed money too since I am struggling like every other student who isn't from a wealthy home. I bought foodstuffs with the money, what else do students need? Lol
Till today, I never got to know her source of wealth even when people kept saying she has a Yahoo boyfriend while others said she has a rich relative abroad and the like. But this didn't make my relationship with her end. I still see her updates on Facebook, still the rich lady who owns a big supermarket now. Once in a while, I message her on Facebook and that is it. I believe her money is a clean one because if not, her status would have changed from the one I am still seeing or still could be lucky her life is still useful and needed a second chance from God. Lol
