Will free education jeopardize standard of teaching?

Talking about free education, it is never free because someone has to pay for it. The only thing is that it may be free for the one receiving the basic knowledge, going to school, getting the necessary materials, etc but someone paid for it to be free. How?

Some taxpayers might want, or like their money to be spent on funding schools, free colleges and universities, and this open the door for one who is ready to be educated; i.e, it depends on the choice of the individual to go for it or not.

The real key is, nothing is free. Everything best enjoyed has a cost and the cost must be sourced by someone. If it is free for one person, then someone else is paying for it. Education is not expensive. Information is gotten everywhere — all thanks to technology where you can get anything anywhere, as long as you have a working smartphone or laptop.

Egbonn.png

Let's take for example, the NGOs who founded several foundations with different names, their purpose is to help those who cannot afford education, free for them, and they are the ones to fund everything; starting from the books the children would use, creating conducive classrooms for them, and seeing that they gained enough knowledge to be better individuals in the society.

Education is very important, and when people are educated, it also helps society to grow instead of having a group of ignorant ones and illiterate to handle a certain project. You know how the end would be. Though, I am not saying they are daft too, there is always a big difference between a literate and illiterate when handling projects.

Egbonn.png

For me, free education can be possible, provided there are proper planning, and some factors are seriously dealt with. For instance, in a country where corruption, embezzlement, insufficient taxes and the likes are very high, free education can't be implemented because those things have to be thrashed out first before seeing that this programme goes well and successfully.

Those who would benefit from this free education are the poor and underprivileged children whose families are incapable of sending them to school. Their happiness would be seen when they see that there is free education for them without paying any charges.

But, since we see free education as something worthwhile for everyone, the pros and cons should be looked into because whatever has good sides must surely have bad sides.

Egbonn.png

One of the effects of free education is that, it would enable students who do not have to struggle or start thinking of how to pay tuition fees or meet other expenses, to concentrate fully on learning and gain more knowledge through education. When the only focus of the individual is shifted to learning, it will empower him or her to work in the direction of an intellectual society.

Now note this: when education is free in a state or country that is poor, there will be low quality of education which could affect the number of students being accepted to be low or classes will be crowded, and the objective might not be achieved at the end of the day.

Another effect is that free education might make some not value it, thereby not paying attention or focusing on what is being taught. Remember, some people will never appreciate something that comes freely; they only go to the extent of focusing on a thing and taking it seriously when they pay for it, because they wouldn't want their efforts to be in waste or vain.

At the end of it all, it might lead them into debt to get an education that is worth it at all costs.

If you want the best in a thing, you have to pay for it. For the government to implement free education, they have to consider the instructors or teachers by making absolute plans for them; ranging from their pay or salaries, ensuring full safety for them, and providing numerous amenities and resources in the school to ensure quality learning.

All of these must be put into place to be assured of standard teaching where education is free. No teacher would be motivated to teach or give his or her best when salaries are pending. No good flow of teaching when instructional materials and other equipment aren't available.

In conclusion, free education can be possible if things are planned accordingly and major factors are considered. It doesn't stop the quality of teaching if those handling the major part of it are taken care of and resources are provided for.

Thanks for your time on my blog.

Senior High School is currently free in Ghana here. And like you just said, government is spending alot of money in the program which in turn affects other sectors. But it seems to be helping the needy families alot. Many are pushing an agenda to make it free for only the needy which I agree and wish it was implemented

 last year

I wish it was implemented too for the sake of the needy who cannot afford it but are willing to be educated. Thanks for reading.

Free education is still the best, the UK runs free education to date and they are doing fine.
The problem is just our Government that refused to provide the necessary materials for students.

Education should be free because of the less privileged.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge dear, you are amazing!!!

Our governments are just selfish and do not have others' interests in mind. Providing free education will make many people happy and giving them the necessary materials to aid in the flow of teaching and learning shouldn´t be a problem whatsoever.
Thank you, Don, for your input. I appreciate it.

You are very right, African leaders are so greedy and self-centred. They don't care about their citizen at all.

Making education free for everyone it's not a easy task and you don't give any profit in short time. But if we see it in bigger frame than it will be very helpful for the nation.

 last year

Sure. It will definitely be helpful for the nation. It's a good thing when free education is being introduced everywhere, especially for those who aren't capable.

It would be better for those students who are unable to finish their education for financial problem. Through this process we can get some young talents who has the capability to contribute in the development of a country.

Yay! 🤗

Free Education will be a good move but in our dear country Nigeria, am afraid if that won't completely ruin the nature of things, without the free Education we see how our tertiary institutions are, now how worse will it be if it's free...
Before we can talk about making it free, there are a lot of things to be put in place and corrected.

 last year

Yes. Doing this isn't something simple but some things have to be put in place so it doesn't hinder the implementation of free education. Thank you for coming.

 last year

Yeah it is true that free education is possible as long as the concerned stakeholders are catered for but then you made emphasis on tax paying as a source of revenue to Fund free education. This would only be possible if citizens actually pay the tax and the tax is utilised for what is necessary but a country struggling with corruption and such funds are embezzled, then what is the benefit of those tax paid.

And secondly there is difference between free education and free higher education: saying free education is collective term used for all the levels of education including primary, secondary school and tertiary institution. Saying everything should be free is almost unrealistic from my own perspective.

I believe that primary school and secondary school education can be free, while tertiary institution education can be made affordable not free.

In fact, I am among those who do not pay tax any longer. I remembered we were tasked to pay it when I was teaching but I don't see it as something being serious with it because our country keeps going into debt. Why are we then paying tax when they keep embezzling it?

I appreciate how you clarified the "free education". Thank you so much 🤗

You are welcome

Free education is a total necessity that we lack access to. But hopefully, there are men and women who want to provide it.

Yes... We have good people who have the concerned of those who can't afford education and they will definitely support them.

I agree with this. People naturally take free stuff for granted.
But if you attach a price tag to it, they treat with more value.

This write-up was very enlightening. Well done.

Many of us, if we are to be sincere do not value something that comes freely and it is a big opportunity one has to embrace.
Thank you so much, @zitalove

I really love ur approach to this content. Even in Nigeria it can be possible had it been we have good government who manges our natural resources well but I am not giving up on naija anyways.

Sure when things are free, some unserious candidate won't value it but the number of people who will truly value it will be higher. For sure the government must plan it well on the part of teachers otherwise the quality will be low and people with money will continue to run after private schools

 last year

You are very right ma. If government do not plan for the teachers who would be doing the work, there wouldn't be quality learning from their sides because it is like someone who is hungry, nothing will make sense to him or her.
Thank you for stopping by ma.

Exactly 💯😂

Education is good but it's good to pay for it,if not some might not take it serious.

Coming from a world in which education is free and mandatory for 100 years now I can truly say that all layers of society benefit, it´s slow, it´s not perfect but open-minded non by the state restricted education is key to making people think for themselves.

 last year

Things can never be perfect, even with this so called free education.
Thanks for coming by.

Truly nothing is really free, if it is free to you someone paid for it to be so unto you. Making higher education free would really cost the government a lot and we know that anything that affects the government's treasury would in turn affect us, in fact the heat will be felt most by us.

I agree with you that free higher education is possible corruption and other greedy acts must first be thrashed out from such a country or state first before it can be gained.

 last year

Yes, free education is possible if those acts are curbed and looked into. Thanks for stopping by.

You are welcome ma

Free education is possible. But the sad thing is that no matter how many NGOs come up, there will still be areas that won't be touched. As the saying goes, you can't save everyone.
I guess we'll wait and see what the future holds in store for education.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

 last year

Yes, inasmuch as free education is concerned, you can never save everywhere in the world. It's my pleasure, Bruno 😊
