WHEN "SOCIETY STANDARDS" BECOME UNREALISTIC PRESSURES

in Hive Learners2 days ago

The society has a standard for everything; these standards are in the form of morals, responsibility, roles in the society, expectations and other behavioural conduct. While some of these standards are realistic, most of them are not.

There is always a laid-down moral standard that one is expected to uphold in the eyes of society; society has set a standard of right and wrong in the society to which a member of society should act in different situations. These morals, among others, include honesty, respect, fairness, being able to keep to promises, etc. It is the society standard that when an elderly person disrespects a younger person, the younger person is limited to how he or she might react to the situation because the other person is elderly. There is a certain moral responsibility that an individual should uphold in their workplace; one is expected to always greet their superior, and on no account can one call their superior at work by name. You have to address your superior as a Sir to show respect, even when you might be older or of the same age as them.

In the societal tree, there is always a share of roles and responsibilities among the members of the society. For instance, while the father is expected by societal standards to provide for his family, the mother is expected to look after the kids, wash and clean and also perform other homely duties, and the children’s responsibility and roles are to be respectful and kind to their parents and other members of society. It is also the responsibility of both parents, resting more on the mother, to train the child to be a respectful and useful member of society. When a child turns out badly, society blames the mother for not keeping to the standard, forgetting that it is the whole society's effort that raises a child.

There are also certain expectations of society for members of society, which are some of which are unrealistic. It is expected that the members of society should get married at a certain age and should have kids immediately after marriage. Should you have a child after marriage, you are expected to have a grand wedding; there is always pressure from society about where you were schooled, where you work, the car you drive, and the house you live in. with the way things are lately, one may find it difficult to settle at an early age since the economy has now become the major determinant of it, people are either unemployed or underemployed and sometimes finds it difficult to take care of their basic needs and as such taking care of a family becomes a problem.

Having kids immediately after marriage is also unrealistic to many, while you can get married, some people still need to prepare their finance and minds before thinking of getting children, some people may have travelled out of the country immediately after their marriage or have plans to relocate to another country, having a child might make it difficult for them, and as such may decide to hold on with having a child immediately after marriage.

The society will always have a standard to have it expects us to live our own lives, but we must always remember not to pressure ourselves because of these standards, as most of these standards are void and unrealistic to uphold. You can only do your best and what sits right with your conscience, and not follow the latter, the expectations and unrealistic standards of society.
