History as a context is really something each and everyone should key in to and get to grasp as many as possible that he or she could grasp, however, in our world today people think less of that and it's also the reason why we keep making the mistakes our forefathers made instead of learning from then and building it up from there.
History, much like raising a child, isn't just the responsibility of the teachers and school boards, nah! It's a collective responsibility that includes parents and all of us.
Our culture is gradually fading because we care very little of history, Cultural enculturation is on the increase even to the extent of us abolishing some of our rich traditions just in favour of Western cultures.... Too bad
History as a school subject however strikes a different chord for me...this is just my personal thoughts though....
Taking my country as a case study, Nigeria, this is a country where education is labelled as a "scam", not because we all do not know the relevance of education, but, because over the years, many graduates after spending so many years in school ends up operating POS Machines, driving tricycles(keke) and engaging in many menial jobs ... All which they don't need to get to the four walls of education before they could do.... This gave rise to the "school na scam" sentiment
Now tell me, getting into the university to study history should not be something bad at all maybe in countries that value their histories, but then, enrolling in this particular course in my country feels like a joke to be honest....
Where are the job opportunities? What are the prospects after graduating with a history degree? How many historical facilities do we have in Nigeria and how many of them are still functional from the little we have?
With all due respect and after consideration of all these factors, what I can tell you is that it's really not worth it.
However, we can still do history as a course component in our various disciplines.
In Nigeria, every student takes a compulsory Entrepreneurship course.
In same vein, since we all know the relevance of history in our lives, it would be beneficial to make history a compulsory course for everyone so that we get to know much about our history and subsequently maintain our culture, however, should not be studied as a disciple of its own.
But in our quest to improve our historical knowledge, we should remember that something much worse than ignorance is false information.
One of the biggest challenges we face is accessing accurate, unaltered historical records, free from governmental or other influences.
Most of the historical tools on the internet are highly falsified and when someone genuinely interested in history picks up this piece and feeds himself wrong historical information, it defeats the purpose.
Funny enough, I was having this same discussion with my colleague just few days ago below where I emphasized on my fear about feeding myself the wrong details.
The question of whether history is important honestly is a question which has an obvious answer...
Knowing and understanding the past, not only help us do better presently but also enables us to navigate through the future.

The history we study in school is tested and have gone through a lot of research before they are put in print.
Students of history are better at understanding where they need to turn when a situation arises.
That's true, however, history can't all be covered in schools.
There are bulks you need to learn on your own by surfing the nets and that's where the challenges of misinformation gets in
The internet is a good source of historical facts but there are lots of junk there. This is why when one studies history, he or she will be able to separate the real from the false.
In the study of history, only objective facts are accepted.
