When the curtains don't match the rug....

Sometimes there is a mismatch

At my workplace there was an elderly gentleman, Mr. Smid, who regularly came in. He was a bachelor living in a care facility and he was really quite pleased to be in the care home. He was always pleased that there were many unattached widows in the place who kept hitting on him. He was happy for the attention but he always had one lament. He would say "there are so many beautiful legs in that place...... I just wish they had the faces to match". I would just smile and say that sometimes you have to take what you can get.

However, life is like that sometimes. A travel destination does match the promotional photo's. A Facebook page doesn't match the person's true lifestyle. The fancy car doesn't match the bank account balance. The beautiful face doesn't match the ugly personality....or maybe vice versa.

But what happens when the mismatch is on a more personal level?

When the art doesn't match the vision

Now the Hive Learners prompt today is about "Bad Art". If it is just artistic expression can it be bad. I'm going to say Yes, art can be very very bad but maybe not in the way you might think.

Now my son is a musician. He loves playing his guitar (and ukelele, piano and drums) and we were talking about music. He said that because music is art it can't be bad. A person may not share the artists vision but that doesn't make it bad, just not to the liking of the listener. In that way there couldn't be bad music.

he had a point

What was my counter? Okay, but what if no-one likes it?

Now I'm not talking about someone like Yoko Ono (wife of John Lennon of The Beatles fame). Her voice was notoriously shrill and her singing was panned by mainstream media. However, some people loved her music and it was the basis of different music genre after. Now compared to her husbands music is was like black and white. If you loved one you probably disliked the other unless you were a true music #

If you loved one you probably disliked the other unless you were a true music connosieur.

In that way her music wasn't Bad as much as it was divisive. Actually a mark of good artwork.

My argument is different.

There is much music I don't care for. When I first heard the song "Homoflow (sp)" I found it....(ahem) unpleasant. Absolutely not my style. As much as I am loathe to say it I would willingly admit that it is music or art on some level.

My argument is this: What if no-one likes it?

And I mean NO-ONE. Not even the artist that made it?

Yes the artist has a vision of what he wants his project to turn out like. Yes he wants to put that vision into creation and make art. What if his skill isn't up to the task and it comes out twisted and wrong?

In that case I would state that Yes. In fact there is Bad art. If it doesn't meet the artists vision, if it is universally derided and universally panned? I'll give that the moniker :BAD

And the funny thing? Even art that the artist made as a joke or in protest like the song "Vaseline" or "School Spirit" which I've heard rumor the artist thought it was silly or bad...could still be considered art. Maybe the artist didn't think so but others did.

Funny how art transcends the person who created it sometimes.

That's just my take but I think it holds up. Care to dispute the point? Care to leave feedback? I love feedback and thank you for reading this far.

Final thought. I could go on a lot longer. Are AI images or music art if there was no human creator? If something is created to divide and spread discontent is it art? There are many many other ways to look at this topic but its Hive, keeping it short is generally appreciated 🤣.
