If I am to answer this question personally, I would first say yes, they seem like a waste of resources especially for someone like me who is not really interested in sports. The amount of money spent on hosting big events such as the World Cup, the Olympics, or other international competitions is always huge. Sometimes I wonder if that money could have been used for something else, like improving education, health, or infrastructure. But on the other hand, I have come to understand that sports bring something special that money alone cannot buy unity, joy, and hope.
I remember a particular time when Nigeria was playing in the African Cup of Nations. That day, I was opportune to watch the match with my brothers. I normally don’t enjoy football, but as the game went on, I found myself completely carried away. I wanted Nigeria to win so badly that when we lost in the last minute, I almost cried. I was shocked at myself because I had never thought football could move me that much. That day I know that sports go beyond just kicking a ball or running on a track it connects people emotionally and brings them together.
Millions of people all over the world share this same passion. The love and loyalty fans have for their teams are sometimes unexplainable. Sporting events give people something to look forward to, something that lifts their spirits and strengthens national pride. During tournaments like the World Cup, you can see how united people become, regardless of tribe, religion, or background. Everyone celebrates together when their team wins, and even when they lose, it still becomes a shared emotional experience.
However, it is true that the money spent on these events is massive. Stadiums are built, facilities are upgraded, and a lot of public funds are used. Sometimes, the benefits don’t seem to match the expenses, especially in developing countries where there are still basic needs unmet. Another sad part is how some officials use sports as an opportunity to steal from the government. Instead of using the money wisely, a large percentage of it ends up in private pockets. That is one of the reasons why people see these international events as wasteful.
Even though sporting events are expensive, I still believe they have their importance. Sports create jobs, inspire young people, and help countries gain recognition in the world. For example, many footballers and athletes who came from poor backgrounds changed their lives and their families’ lives through sports. So, in a way, the money spent is an investment in talent, unity, and joy.
International sporting events are not completely a waste of resources, but the spending should be controlled and transparent. Governments should ensure that funds are used wisely and that other sectors like education and health are not neglected. Sports are good for relaxation, unity, and national pride, but they should not become a reason for corruption or waste. With proper management, they can bring both happiness and progress to a nation.
