Darklights

Some certain things about the dark mostly look like it illuminates darkend glows.

Warri city breathed in two rhythms:

the sun’s by day and then we have the dark’ by noon.

/By day, a hawkers’ cries, the street bustles, people moving to and fro with relentless hustle. But then just like swifts when the sun fled, the Darklights wakes/

We can't say they were just mere absences of light,
They felt like living shadows, very ancient spirits of the land that modernity had paved over. Conversations flows through the streets like oil, with slangs deep as a shimmering dark deep,
As warri pikin talk say "Nepa no won bring light".
To most people, there's always , a reason to hurry home, to lock doors.

/But for Ese, the babe sat on her plank porch, her eyes, glowing even in the dark, her complexion all shades of dark with a figure that's stunning even as at peak darkness there seems to be a shimmering dance of the Darklights on the water/

“They are not monsters,” she keeps telling her little ones in a whisper that seems to echo but to any of them who dared to listen. “They are memories. That one,” she said, pointing to a swirling pillar of indigo darkness, “is the joy of a thousand weddings at the King’s palace. And you see that other one Ejiro?, she pointed to her baby brother,.
The last sigh of a brave warrior. Mumy use to tell me stories about it back then , before all this noise.”

One dark night another day, a particularly bold Darklight, that's feels like sparkling ribbon of deep gold amidst the violet, detached from her presence It did not speak, for it had no voice. But it showed her. It showed her the high areas of hills before the concrete, the quiet ceremonies, the stories told under a blanket of stars.

/"Today na today", Ese whispered under her breath while she reached out a trembling hand. The Darklight did not burn or chill. It felt like peace. It felt like home.
Fear of the dark seems far./

This very darklight seems to enveloped her, she did not vanish. She simply joined the chorus, of voices she heard from afar her own life’s light now a new, gentle melody in the city’s ancient,
What a story for generations to come,
She vows under her breath that her children will definitely cherish her memories some day too..
that humanity’s truest story is not just in the noise we make, but in the quiet, even in Darklight, there lies stories untold..
