This edition of the @hive-learners features topic is one that brought back one of the weirdest memory of our traditional beliefs, among we the Yoruba people of Nigeria, our people believe it's possible for a dead relative to come back to live as a new born baby or in many other forms which I'll be sharing during the course of this article.

Reincarnation is a traditional belief among the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. This belief lay great emphasis on the fact that when people die, they have the ability to resuface/relocate to another place/land/town and continue their life unhindered. This account for verified reports of long dead relative being seen in another place who had remarried and with children, property.

People are named Iyabo, Babatunde, yewande meaning mother have returned and father is back respectively, those are name given to newly born children in this part of the world, and this is so probably because the child looks like a dead relative or exhibit some attribute of a long gone relative.

Other means through which the Yoruba people believe in reincarnation, is the celebration of Egungun festival, the Egungun(masquerade) is closely linked to this belief of reincarnation, because there are high possibilities of the Egungun saying words that are unique to a long dead relative, even though they might not have meet each other during the life time if the dead relative, this lead to the believed that our dead have come back, to pay us a visit in the form of a masquerade.

The Abiku/Ogbaje (meaning a child who died at a tender age, but is been born back into the same family), are further confirmation that life continues after death and that some can come back to life many times even into the same family if they so desire.

Though studies have later shown that the child been identify as Abiku in the olden days are mostly sickle cell patients, but due to lack of technological equipment use in cross checking genotype and blood group, the ancient elders mistake the children for a Spiritually powerful child, who as the ability to be given birth to, die and still come back to the same family.

My opinion on this traditional beliefs is that, the belief should be abolished, because I personally don't think it's possible for a dead person to come back to life in any form, either as a new born baby or as the same person, who now move to another environment, get married and bear Children, but mysteriously disappear immediately anyone from his their former life saw them, I find this rediculous though I've heard it happen twice in my environment, whereby the new wife and children are now been left with no husband or father.

Yea, it's one of the many traditional beliefs we have, though I felt they should just let those child be, instead of mounting them with them superstition of being a new version of a dead soul.
