According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, temper is a state of feeling or frame of mind at a particular time. This means that a temper can either be proneness to anger or calmness of mind, but the word is often used in respect to the former, which is why people make statements like “He has a bad temper.” “She cannot control her anger.”
I would argue that having a temper is not always a bad characteristic in any person because it is sometimes needed to navigate certain situations. For example, the anger of citizens can lead them to challenge poor leadership and drive for change. In some other instances, a bad temper is the direct effect of a person’s environment or condition. For example, if you’re born in a poor country where inflation and insecurity are on the rise and you can barely make ends meet, it becomes a normal reaction for you to get angry easily.

You don’t have to do too much to experience this emotion daily. Just by hearing the news of four children kidnapped from their schools or a journalist killed in her home, you realize how easy it is to feel anger on every level. In this case, it is considered valid because your anger is a natural response to something terrible or a system that needs reform.
However, having a hot or terrible temper as your default without valid external factors can be dangerous to both oneself and those around them. It would mean that you are unable to control your outbursts publicly or intimately, and it’s unfortunate that a lot of people do not understand how this can mar their reputations or send them to jail. In fact, uncontrolled anger is glorified in a lot of societies where violence is the response to almost every issue. The encouragers only detach when they realize that trouble has been caused by the behavior they support.
Many people who are reactionary in an angry way underestimate how easy it is to take uncontrolled actions based on emotions. A lot of them consider it to be normal, while forgetting that the inability to control a hot temper is the same reason many men have killed their wives for not performing domestic chores at home. It’s the reason parents have inflicted pain on their children for disobeying their orders. This same temper is the reason people make poor decisions that later come back to haunt them. Many of these people who refuse to check themselves and seek help only realize how they have ruined their lives when they begin to face the consequences of having a bad temper.

Society should not allow people to make excuses for the damages their poor behaviors and anger may have caused others or public properties. Instead, more awareness should be created for people to understand the slippery slope that bad temperament usually is. Every single child should be taught how to manage their temper from childhood. They should be encouraged to think before they speak, express their grievances calmly, and take breathing exercises in heated situations.
Society has roles to play in this too. We can focus more on resolving conflicts amicably, passing fair judgments in courts, and continue to punish those who refuse to submit themselves to change. Every institution should have bodies that look out for mental health cases and people who are prone to anger that might lead to the destruction of properties or harm to others. This way, some risks can be mitigated before they become problems and children can be counseled early on.
I believe it is a collective effort to raise peaceful children who can express their emotions without destruction. And by so doing, we can make our environments safer for living and interacting with one another, as well as notice a significant improvement in our mental and physical health.
