Teleportation of a human

Teleportation is a futuristic technology we put on the same level as time travel, Dyson Spheres and nuclear fusion. As a child, I longed to teleport to far off beaches and famous places, so teleportation is something I have payed attention to for years in longing. We have taken the first bold step towards this fantastic technology through quantum teleportation of qubits in a quantum computer, and more is to come.

Quantum entanglement is a relationship between particles. When particles are entangled, they will interact with one another no matter how far they are apart from one another. Albert Einstein described this observation and theory, and was interested in the way information flowed so instantaneously between entangled particles. NASA was recently able to teleport qubits, the foundational particle and unit of a quantum computer, 44-miles using this principle. Quantum computers can use this teleportation of their fundamental qubits to change the way we store data and transmit information. This was a massive step forward for quantum computing technology and the first step for human teleportation.

As cool as teleporting qubits in a quantum computer is, how far off from human teleportation are we? Teleporting a human would involve breaking them down and transporting them as information. In essence, every gene from every cell would need to be transferred and reconstructed, which would take more time to do than is conceivable using our current technology. Future technology could scan a human being and transfer each individual atom to the correct location on the other end of a teleportation system, but questions need to be answered about the process. Would the human on the other side of the teleportation system be the same person? Would their personality translate? What about errors during teleportation? These questions and more will be posed and mulled as we enter this strange new frontier.
