Today is Thursday, but this Wednesday I promised to show the temple of Anakopia and I must fulfill my promise here. I hope that dear @tattoodjay will understand me correctly, and his hand will be healthy and full of strength again.

I do not belong to the adherents of the Christian religion, however, like any other. But it hurt me to look at these unfortunate ruins. I cannot say otherwise. I never wish evil on anyone, not even my enemies. But for those people who had a hand in the destruction of this temple and the entire fortress, I cannot wish well, no matter what world they are in.

There is very little reliable information about the Anakopia fortress and the temple inside it, and those that exist sometimes contradict each other.

In the 6th-7th centuries, a temple dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos was built on the top of Mount Anakopia. The medieval Georgian chronicles of the 11th century mention "not man-made scripture" - the miraculous Anakopia icon of the Mother of God. In the XI century, the church was rebuilt and consecrated in the name of the holy great martyr Theodore Tiron. In 1866, behind the altar part of the temple, a slab was found with a carved Greek inscription: "The temple of St. Theodore was erected under Archbishop Michael in the month of April 16 ...". It can be assumed that the "Archbishop Michael" mentioned in the inscription is none other than Archbishop Michael of Constantinople Kerularius.
The temple was rebuilt several times. The last reconstruction was carried out by the monks of the New Athos Monastery at the beginning of the 20th century. The rubble of the southern church chapel and the adjacent building on the eastern side were cleared away. On the remains of the walls of the south side-chapel, a rainwater collection cistern was built with a drainage terrace above it. Inside the ancient temple, a small chapel was built in honor of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, and stone details of the ancient temple were installed in the altar chapel. The layout of the adjacent territory was partially changed and the walls of the temple outbuildings were completed. The monks cleared and repaired an ancient cistern-well with clean drinking water

Я не отношусь к адептам христианской религии, впрочем, как и любой другой. Но мне было больно смотреть на эти несчастные руины. По другому я сказать не могу. Я никому никогда не желаю зла, даже врагам. Но тем людям, которые приложили руку к разрушению этого храма и всей крепости я не могу желать добра, на каком бы свете они не находились.

Про Анакопийскую крепость и храм внутри её достоверных сведений очень мало, а те, что есть, порой противоречат друг другу.

В VI—VII веках на вершине Анакопийской горы был построен храм, посвящённый Пресвятой Богородице. В средневековых грузинских летописях XI века упоминается «не рукотворное писание» — чудодейственная Анакопийская икона Божией Матери. В XI веке церковь была перестроена и освящена во имя святого великомученика Феодора Тирона. В 1866 году за алтарной частью храма была найдена плита с высеченной греческой надписью: «Воздвигнут храм святого Феодора при Архиепископе Михаиле месяца апреля 16…». Можно полагать, что упоминаемый в надписи «Архиепископ Михаил» никто иной, как архиепископ Константинопольский Михаил Керуларий.
Храм неоднократно перестраивался. Последняя реконструкция была выполнена монахами Новоафонского монастыря в начале XX века. Были расчищены завалы южного церковного придела и смежного с восточной стороны помещения. На остатках стен южного придела была устроена цистерна для сбора дождевой воды с водосборной террасой над ней. Внутри древнего храма была выстроена небольшая часовня в честь Иверской иконы Божией Матери, в алтарном приделе были установлены каменные детали древнего храма. Частично была изменена планировка прилегающей территории и достроены стены пристроек храма. Монахи расчистили и отремонтировали древнюю цистерну-колодец с чистой питьевой водой

This wall is assembled from the fragments found on these ruins. Apparently this is all that remains of the once rich ancient temple. You can see limestone slabs depicting fish, cypresses, a cross, and other early Christian symbols.

Эта стена собрана из фрагментов, найденных на этих развалинах. Видимо это всё, что осталось от некогда богатого древнего храма. Вы можете видеть известняковые плиты с изображением рыбы, кипарисов, креста и других раннехристианских символов.

This is all that I photographed then when visiting Anakopia and this temple. Then I did not know all this background. And now it remains for us to make the return journey to complete this ascent.

Это всё, что я снял тогда при посещении Анакопии и этого храма. Тогда я не знал всей этой предыстории. И теперь нам осталось совершить обратный путь, чтобы закончить это восхождение.

On the way back, I looked inside the first watchtower. Unfortunately, it looks completely abandoned. Even so, the tower has not lost its charm.

На обратном пути я заглянул внутрь первой сторожевой башни. К сожалению, она выглядит полностью заброшенной. Но и при этом башня не потеряла своего очарования.

Imperceptibly we went down to the city. However, in the city itself there are also enough ruins. After the 1992-1993 war with Georgia, not all houses and infrastructure have been restored. There are abandoned houses even in the city center.

Незаметно мы спустились в город. Впрочем, в самом городе тоже хватает развалин. После войны с Грузией 1992-1993 года до сих пор не все дома и инфраструктура восстановлены. Заброшенные дома есть даже в центре города.

But no matter what, life goes on. New Athos remains the pearl of sunny Abkhazia. Even when it rains and clouds descend from the mountains to the city.

Но не смотря ни на что жизнь продолжается. Новый Афон остаётся жемчужиной солнечной Абхазии. Даже когда идёт дождь и тучи опускаются с гор на город.
