Since that walk I have discovered the abandoned house was once the Dower House. In the past once the Lord who lived in the nearby big house died his wife would move into the Dower House so their heirs could take over the main house. Also found out the gates to the wood used to be a much grander affair, with the stonework that used to be in place either side of what is left having been taken down at some point.
