Today it was my daughters last day in school before the Christmas break, and she was singing in the school choir for their Christmas carol service at St Giles Cathedral in the city centre of Edinburgh.
I got the bus to the edge of the city centre and then walked towards the cathedral from there, passing Edinburgh castle (above) on the way.
I had to climb up the hill towards the royal mile, walking around the side of the castle. As I hit the royal mile, I passed the Tolbooth Kirk (above) - and old church that is now a tourist information centre !
From there I walked down to the Cathedral to meet my wife - who works just a few blocks away from this location. People were already queuing to get inside the cathedral, which we couldnt be bothered with, so we decided to walk further down the royal mile to kill a bit of time and let the queue go down.
We went around the side which took us past the Scottish Supreme Courts. Its odd, because I've walked this way quite a few times, but its never sunken in before that this is where the supreme Court is.
Round the back of the cathedral we spotted this tiny little window. I love architectural detail like this. The window is even made from stained glass. I just love the fact that they went to the bother to add this !
From there we walked past the Mercat Cross (Market Cross). It marks the locations of where markets used to be held in Edinburgh in days gone by.
We headed down the royal mile and I was quite surprised at how busy it was. In summer this street is always full of tourists, and today was no different. This crowd was gathered around a street performer who was juggling manchettes and a fire stick while balancing on a wheel thing ! You can see him above the crowd over by the white tree of lights.
Walking further down we stopped to take a pic of one of the street christmas decorations.
We got to the top of Cockburn street (sounds painful) and made a pizza restaurant booking for after the carol service, as we knew our daughter would be starving by then !
We made our way back up to the cathedral because it was time for the carol service.
We walked passed the statue of Adam Smith along the way - one of Scotland's famous sons - he was the founder of modern economics !
Outside the cathedral is this cool statue of Walter Montagu Douglas Scott (thats a fine set of names) - you can see him there at the top with his trusty road cone by his side !
The cathedral is 900 years old and is quite stunning inside.
We were sat next to the organ and had this lovely view of the stunning vaulted roof above is which is painted in the colours of the flag of Scotland (the St Andrews Cross).
The service was lovely - the girls choir from her school is excellent (way better than the choir from my school when I was a kid - thats for sure).
On the way out we saw this statue of John Knox who was a major figure in the Protestant movement here in Scotland, and used to preach from within this cathedral.
By the time we got out of the cathedral it was dark. We went for our pizza and then hiked up the street to get a bus home.
We took a shortcut through the middle of the quad - this is Edinburgh Old College, the home of the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh. It has this stunning courtyard you can walk through, and it was great to see their Christmas tree !
Shortly after we caught the bus home, wrapping up our wednesday walk for this week. It was great to go to the carol service and get to see some of the sights up town at the same time !

Wow, it's almost like walking around in a video game like Witcher! I bet the acoustics in that cathedral are killer! What a great place to hold a choir concert! Thanks for sharing!
The sound is quite impressive in the cathedral - it has a fairly long reverb and sounds great with the type of carols they were singing.
