Wednesday Walk - Porthclais Harbour and coastal path - south west Wales

in Wednesday Walklast year

In early April we went for a beautiful walk alongside the harbour at Porthclais near St David's in South West Wales, and then along the coastal path above it.

It was a stunner of a day. The sun was shining and lighting up the sea in a fantastic blue-green colour, although along the coastal path it was really quite windy.

Porthclais is a small quaint harbour built in a protected sea inlet. The old pier is probably around 150-200 years old. Its quite remote, with very few houses around it.

I dont think the port gets much use anymore, although there was one small creel boat alongside the slip, which was further up the inlet.

It really looks idylic here, without much impact from modern building and life. We started the walk further up at a National Trust car park, where the inlet ends and is fed by a stream.

The creel fisherman/woman keeps some of their creels stacked at the top of the slip. These will be used for catching mainly edible crab and lobster.

You can walk down to the pier itself, with the path taking you up above it, and providing lovely views down along the inlet and over the old pier.

The tide was out while we were there. With the clear water you could easily see into the river bed. That cottage above the inlet must have some incredible views - it was the only one we could see anywhere near it.

It only took about 15-20 minutes to walk along the side of the inlet and past the port. We were taking our time, enjoying the weather and the sunshine. Just past the port, the land opens up and you get a clear view of the sea (this looks out into the Atlantic Ocean), and the path then leads off along the cliff tops as part of the Pembrokeshire coastal path.

The rock formations along this part of the path were stunning, as they are with a lot of the other parts of the coastal path we saw in this area. The colour of the sea was mesmerising !

The wind was so strong up on the cliffs that we really did have to watch what we were doing. The path is fairly safe and keeps you far enough away from the edge, with barriers at all the right places, but to catch some of the better pics, you really do have to lean out. For the pic above, I really was getting totally battered by the wind - luckily, pushing me inland !

Even though it was sunny, there was quite a lot of clouds, but the wind was pushing them along very rapidly, and it was great to watch their shadows racing out across the sea !

We walked for about 45mins along the coastal path taking in the views, before turning back towards the car. I actually came back with slight sunburn that day. It was odd, you couldnt feel it being that warm due to the wind, but the sun was beating down the whole way.

The cliff and sea views were awesome along the entire stretch that we did - very impressive !

We just retraced our steps, and got back to the inlet, before heading back to the car park. There were a fair few other people around doing the same walk. It wasnt mobbed, but busy enough considering that the car park is fairly small, with nowhere else to park, so I think we were lucky to get in that day - there were only a few spaces left.

We really did enjoy this stretch of the coast and seeing the old harbour - lovely memories from our vacation in South West Wales !

That's a beautiful coastal path but you should be careful walking along it... !PIZZA

Very true - you do have to be careful, but to be fair, this path is maintained, and is generally quite safe !

Such a beautiful area, it has the feeling of beign remote and away from too many people so still pure and pristine

that pier is holdingup well for being so old

Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk, its my pleasure to host it and see all the posts each week from all around the world, including yours, if you have time visit some of the other walks this week there are so many interesting ones

Aye, it is a lovely area, and quite remote - its right in the far corner of Wales, and away from major population centres. It was a great place to visit !
!PIZZA

anywhere away from major population areas always sounds good to me :)

Wow, this is beautiful! It reminds me of the east coast of the US. Especially the northern portion around Maine etc. I'd love to visit this place one day! Talk about amazing!

It really was a lovely area. And yes, it has similarities with the Maine coastline (I was there back in 92 for a summer - loved it !).

What a lovely walk along there.
The weather was superb ☀️😊 it makes it almost magical and the colour of the water. Wow.

Ow, those cliffs and the blue sea made me remember the coast of Portugal. Being on the edge of the cliffs and with the strong wind.., huh, good it pushed you inland :)

It really was lovely. The wind was fine - I come from a windy part of the UK, so am used to dealing with it, but always better when its blowing inland !

What a beautiful! The views are so breathtaking. I love the color of the sea in the pics. 😍

This cliff looks beautiful. I love when the water looks so blue or green... and the contrast with the stones is incredible. I hope you enjoyed the ride, and that that burn didn't hurt you too much. Greetings! 😃

The burn was fine, it was just very slight on my cheeks. It was an awesome day out - loved it !
!PIZZA

hahah I know exactly what you're talking about, that's how my face was after my last walk in the woods. Despite the fact that the trees were tall and we mainly walked in the shade, the sun still managed to burn me 😅

Wow!! That's some stunning views

Aye, the views all around the Pembroke coast were quite awesome ! Great area to explore !
