Today, I have the pleasure of inviting you to get to know and walk the streets of the province of Ciego de Ávila. We'll explore its urban styles, landscapes, and the natural environment of the local avileño people. I will also take you on a tour of various central places like the Boulevard, colonial buildings, daily life, and artistic corners until sunset 🌅.

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a conocer y caminar las calles de la provincia de Ciego de Ávila, desde sus estilos urbanísticos, paisajes y ambiente natural del avileño de a pie. También les presentaré un recorrido por distintos lugares céntricos como el Boulevar, edificios coloniales, día a día y abras artísticas hasta el atardecer 🌅.
Espero les gusten las calles y disfruten cada uno de esto diseños urbanos y arquitectónicos. ¡Acompáñame en este maravilloso recorrido 😉!
Ciego de Ávila is a modern city, although in its historic center, many features of the typical colonial architecture of the region still stand out. Horse-drawn carriages still exist for urban transport within the city. As the day begins, you can see the calm pace of people crossing the avenues to go to work and school.
As you can see, it's an environment with very little economic development, but one filled with good people and a desire to get ahead.
Ciego de Ávila es una urbe moderna, aunque en el casco histórico se resaltan muchos rasgos de la arquitectura colonial típica de la región, aún existen coches a caballos para el transporte urbano de la ciudad, comenzando con el día se aprecia el paso tranquilo de la gente cruzando las avenidas para ir a los trabajos y escuelas.
Como se observa es un ambiente de muy poco desarrollo económico, pero con buenas personas y ganas de salir delante.
The first hours upon entering the historic center, we come across Parque Martí, a national jewel of my hometown. Like everything, this park has its traditions. In the morning, people usually pass through on their way to work, and in the evening, it turns into a skating rink for children and teenagers seeking high-adrenaline challenges.
Also, as has been the custom for a long time, the girls walk in one direction and the boys in another, so they can exchange gestures and glances when they cross paths, a tradition that has served to unite couples for life.
Las primeras horas en la entrada al casco histórico nos encontramos con el Parque Martí, joya nacional de mi pueblo. Como todo este parque tiene sus tradiciones con la mañana donde suelen pasar personas hacia sus trabajos y al caer la tarde se convierte en una pista de patinaje para niños y adolescentes en busca de retos de mucha adrenalina.
También, como sucede desde hace mucho tiempo las muchachas caminan en una dirección y los muchachos en otra, para poder intercambiar gestos y miradas en el cruce, servido para la unión de parejas de por vida.
On one side of the park, the first bus stop that existed in the city was located. Since then, Parque Martí has become a place to "wait for the bus" in the shade while resting on its benches. As you can see, there are many trees that, according to history, are over 50 years old, and are therefore part of the town's heritage.
In my youth, I spent many nights here chatting with friends, dancing, and even flirting.
A un costado del parque, se ubicó la primera parada de ómnibus que existió en la ciudad. Desde ese entonces el Parque Martí se ha convertido en un lugar para “esperar la guagua” a la sombra y descansando en los asientos. Como pueden ver hay muchos árboles que según la historia, cuentan con más de 50 años de existencia, y por tanto patrimonios para el pueblo.
En mi juventud eran muchas las noches que venía a conversar con amistades, bailar y hasta ligar.
Entering the Boulevard section, a modern walkway inaugurated in 2008 by the First Secretary who governed the city at the time. It is nestled along the commercial center of "Independencia" Street and was designed with modern-style elements in metal, combined with the surroundings of the historic center while keeping in mind the existing heritage values, characterized by an eclectic architecture.
It features interesting sculptures and is the setting for important cultural events such as the Book Fair.
Entrando a la parte del Boulevar, un moderno paseo inaugurado en 2008 por el Primer Secretario que gobernaba la ciudad en la época. Está enclavado a lo largo del centro comercial de la calle "Independencia" y concebido con elementos de estilo moderno, en metal, combinado con el entorno del centro histórico y teniendo presentes los valores patrimoniales existentes, caracterizados por una arquitectura ecléctica.
Presenta interesantes esculturas y es escenario de importantes acontecimientos culturales como la Feria del Libro.
The site includes surrounding facilities such as the "Piña Colada" disco, restaurants, light food cafeterias, a Crafts Workshop, and an Exhibition and Sales Hall.
The contrast of red, blue, green, pink, among other colors, stands out, helping to highlight the architecture of the area's valuable buildings. These are complemented by gardens, galleries, benches, and the most emblematic of all: a 12-story building adorned with the flag of Cuba and the 26th of July flag.
El sitio incluye a sus alrededores instalaciones como la discoteca "Piña Colada", restaurantes, cafeterías de alimentos ligeros, taller de Artesanía y Salón de Exposición y Venta.
Sobresale el contraste de color rojo, azul, verde y rosado, entre otros, para contribuir a resaltar la arquitectura de valiosos edificios del área, a los que se suman jardines, galerías, bancos y el 12 plantas más emblemático de todos con la bandera de cuba y del 26 de julio.
Continuing my walk to share my daily routine, as the sun begins to set, I head towards quieter neighborhoods where cars rest under the shade of trees, and neighbors chat sitting on their front porches.
The streets start to become less sunny, and people are in their homes preparing meals.
Siguiendo mi caminata para presentarles mi rutina diaria, al comenzar a bajar un poco el sol, me dirijo hacia barrios más tranquilos donde los carros descansan bajo las sombras de los árboles, y los vecinos conversan sentados en los portales.
Las calles empiezan a estar menos soleadas y las personas en sus hogares en las labores de comidas.
It's also worth mentioning that very close to the boulevard, you can see numerous heritage buildings. These include the San Eugenio de la Palma Catholic Church with its statue of the city's patron saint, Savings Banks, the Sevilla Hotel, the City Hall, and the UNEAC Cultural Center. I have visited the latter many times to see excellent galleries by artists from across the nation.
Hay que mencionar también que muy cerca del boulevard se aprecian numerosos inmuebles de valor patrimonial, entre los que figuran la Iglesia Católica San Eugenio de la Palma y su estatua santo patrón de la ciudad, Bancos de Ahorros, el Hotel Sevilla, el Ayuntamiento y el centro de Cultura UNEAC, este último donde participó muchas veces para ver excelentes galerías por artistas de la nación.
Many of the buildings, constructed in previous centuries, are undergoing conservation and restoration actions due to their advanced age.
Now, with the day ended, one can see the desolation of a boulevard where people prefer to stay home rather than walk the city streets. They have grown tired of the extensive blackouts and lack of resources that leave them with no desire to visit the downtown area.
Muchas de las edificaciones, construidas en centurias anteriores, se someten a acciones de conservación y restauración por sus años de antigüedad.
Ya en pasada terminado el día, se puede ver la desolación de un boulevar, que prefiere estar en casa que paseando las calles de la ciudad, se a cansado de los extensos apagones y falta de recursos que ni ganas les dan de recorrer el centro.
Concluding my journey to introduce you to my inner Ciego de Ávila, known as the city of portals, I walked a little deeper into its surroundings, slowly and enjoying the total silence in the streets.
A Chinese restaurant that ceased operations years ago due to poor maintenance by the staff and needed reconstruction of the facility; it currently appears that there are plans to renovate it.
Concluyendo mi travesía para presentarles mi Ciego de Ávila interno, conocida como la ciudad de los portales, pues camine un poco más profundo sus alrededores, despacio y disfrutando del silencio total en las calles.
Un restaurante Chino que hace años dejó de funcionar por el mal mantenimiento del personal y reconstrucción a la instalación, actualmente parece que desean renovarlo.
Next, phrases on buildings and national banners caught my attention. Among them, "If there are fruits, life flourishes" and "A better world is possible." You stop for a moment to look at them, and you feel that these phrases encapsulate something of the Avileño spirit: effort, joy, and hope for life.
You continue walking and pass a large sign that says "LIFT THE BLOCKADE," and you realize it has been more than 60 years of a tightening U.S. blockade on the island. The flowers around the sign are like small sparks of resistance and hope.
A continuación captaron mi atención frases de edificios y pancartas nacionales, de ellas "Si Hay frutos, la vida florece" y "Un mundo mejor es posible" donde te detienes un momento a mirarlo, y sientes que esas frases encierran algo del espíritu avileño: esfuerzo, alegría y esperanza de vida.
Sigues caminando y pasas frente a un cartel grande que dice TUMBA EL BLOQUEO, y te das cuanta que son más de 60 años con un recrudecimiento bloqueo estadounidense sobre la isla. Las flores alrededor del letrero son como pequeñas chispas de resistencia y esperanza.
To conclude my post, here are some beautiful photos that the city's sunset gifted me. I tried to take some shots with the natural light and drizzle on the outskirts of the town.
Para concluir mi post, una bellas fotos que me regalo el atardecer de la ciudad, trate realizar algunas tomas fotográficas con la luz natural y la llovizna, a las afueras del pueblo.
