The Cathedral Square in Havana is not simply a large, old space. It is an imposing place, surrounded by beautiful colonial mansions and the majestic Havana Cathedral, consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and declared a World Heritage Site. This spacious area is also a location of invaluable historical, cultural, and patrimonial value.
Throughout time, this site has been a witness to the city's history and evolution, remaining impassive through the centuries. It remains unchanged while the city around it evolves and transforms. Walking towards it is like stepping into a different era, as if time were running parallel to the one we inhabit and we were experiencing a moment frozen in the past.
Currently, Cathedral Square belongs to the historical center of Old Havana, and as such, great care has been taken with its restoration and conservation due to its major patrimonial importance. Its ground is completely covered by cobblestones, and the buildings on all four sides are among the most beautiful and luxurious of their time. They all share a similar appearance because they were constructed in the same century, giving them common features such as large stone columns, arches, spacious windows, and balconies with wrought-iron railings. This architectural uniformity is part of its charm. Every year, it is visited by many people, especially foreigners, as it is also a major tourist destination.
The buildings that stand out the most, besides the Cathedral, are the Palace of the Marquises of Aguas Claras, the Palace of the Count of Lombillo, and the Palace of the Marquis of Arcos. All of them are clear examples of the colonial architecture of their time, and today they function as museums and spaces where we can learn about the history of the Plaza and its surroundings.
The site itself and the nearby streets are a great attraction. In addition to its historical value, the place is also steeped in Cuban culture, and there are several shops where you can purchase handicrafts, goldsmithing, or paintings by talented artists.
Very close to this Plaza is also a magnificent work of art that compels everyone walking past it to stop and admire it. This is the Mural of Personalities (Mural de las Personalidades), which is located on a facade opposite one of the entrances to the Palace of the Marquis of Arcos, on Mercaderes Street.
The mural depicts a fictional scene where illustrious Cuban personalities from the 19th century gather. It features important figures from our history such as Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Ignacio Agramonte. Also included are distinguished academics like Félix Varela, and poets and writers such as José María Heredia, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, and Cirilo Villaverde, among other renowned figures. It's a mural with great detail and very much in keeping with the history of the surrounding area.
Due to all these architectural beauties and the cultural richness of the area, the Plaza de la Catedral and the surrounding locations are highly visited and are always a landmark for everyone who comes to explore Old Havana.

La Plaza de la Catedral de La Habana no es simplemente un gran espacio antiguo. Es un lugar imponente, rodeado de hermosas mansiones coloniales y de la majestuosa Catedral de la Habana, consagrada a la Santísima Virgen María, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Este amplio espacio es además un sitio de incalculable valor histórico, cultural y patrimonial.
Este sitio ha sido a lo largo del tiempo testigo de la historia y la evolución de la ciudad, manteniéndose impasible a través de los siglos. Permaneciendo sin cambiar mientras a su alrededor la ciudad evoluciona y se transforma. Caminar hacia ella es adentrarse en una época diferente, como si el tiempo corriera paralelo al que estamos habitando y estuviéramos viviendo un instante detenido en el pasado.
En la actualidad la Plaza de la Catedral pertenece al centro histórico de La Habana Vieja, por lo que se ha mantenido un gran cuidado en su restauración y conservación debido a su gran importancia patrimonial. Su suelo está completamente cubierto por adoquines y las edificaciones que se encuentran en sus cuatro lados son unas de las más hermosas y lujosas de su época. Todas son similares porque fueron construidas en el mismo siglo, por lo que tienen características comunes como grandes columnas de piedra, arcos, amplias ventanas y balcones con rejas de hierro forjado, esta uniformidad arquitectónica es parte de su encanto. Cada año es visitada por muchas personas, sobre todo extranjeros, ya que este es además un lugar turístico.
Las edificaciones que más se destacan además de la Catedral son, el Palacio de los Marqueses de Aguas Claras, el Palacio del Conde de Lombillo y el Palacio del Marqués de Arcos. Todos son claros ejemplos de la arquitectura colonial de su época, y en la actualidad funcionan como museos y espacios donde podemos conocer acerca de la historia de la Plaza y sus alrededores.
El sitio en sí y las calles más cercanas son una gran atracción. Además del valor histórico, el lugar también está impregnado de la cultura cubana y hay varios locales donde se pueden adquirir obras de artesanía, orfebrería o pinturas de talentosos artistas.
Muy cercano a esta Plaza está también una grandiosa obra de arte que impone detener el paso de todo el que camina frente a ella para admirarla, se trata del Mural de las Personalidades que está ubicado en una fachada que se encuentra frente a una de las entradas del Palacio del Marqués de Arcos, en la calle Mercaderes.
El mural refleja una escena ficticia donde se encuentran ilustres personalidades del siglo XIX en Cuba. Muestra figuras importantes de nuestra historia como Carlos Manuel de Céspedes e Ignacio Agramonte. También a ilustres académicos como Félix Varela, y a poetas y escritores como José María Heredia, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda y Cirilo Villaverde, entre otros reconocidos personajes. Es un mural con gran detalle y muy acorde con la historia de los alrededores.
Debido a todas estas bellezas arquitectónicas y a la riqueza cultural del lugar, la Plaza de la Catedral y los lugares que la rodean son muy visitados y son siempre un referente para todo el que viene a conocer La Habana Vieja.
