If I were in my country now, I know that with the month of May the real spring would begin and my eyes would be fixed on the unfolding, green and blooming trees and the yellow heads of the dandelions which preside over everything in the city.
Well, here in Greece, the weather has been great for a long time - for the last few days, it's been almost out of balance! It seems as if recently we were still covered in scarves, and already the summer shoes are restless, as they want me to put them on and enjoy the long-awaited spring. And it's been possible to sleep with open windows for a long time. I love such sunny and warm weather, which constantly invites you to go outside for a walk, does not allow you to feel lazy, forces you to walk, smile, enjoy every new blooming flower.
So, let's go outside again and enjoy walking. Our neighbors have been urging us to visit Simos beach for a long time, before there is a sea of tourists. So, we headed there.
The road to the beach was beautiful. Mountainous, narrow, but not serpentine - not motion sick and not dangerous. There are green gorges and flowering trees all around! You can get to the island very quickly and for a small fee by ferry, which runs frequently. Or by yacht if you have any. And those sailing yachts decorate the picture.
There are actually two beaches pointing in different directions, so there is always the option of swimming without waves. The wind blew during the day, so putting down our brought umbrella is out of the question - the wind turns it inside out in two minutes. Only large, durable, stationary umbrellas can withstand them. There is not even a hint of shade on the beach, so under the scorching sun without an umbrella you will definitely burn in an hour, so you will have to buy sunbed under a stationary umbrella.
But we came not to sunbathe but to just have leisure time, to explore this beautiful place by walking along the beach. There is also more than a kilometer of sandy beach, where you can walk freely.
The water has a turquoise tint, is very clear, and the beautiful sandy bottom is clearly visible. No living creatures were observed either on land or in water, just a few small fishes. The water is shallow. If you are a deep water lover, then you will not like this beach. However, if you want to take a photo of yourself in the backdrop of azure water for Instagram, or have a child who likes to splash in the shallow water, then you will definitely like it here.
I don’t know how it is in other months, but now the incessant squally wind does not allow you to relax. This wind made the rest a bit uncomfortable, so we ran away after our walk and short swim. In addition to everything, this wind plays a cruel joke: it cools the body, so you don’t realize that the sun has already thoroughly fried you, and you don’t notice how you’re starting to burn.
The shallow bottom and flat shore with soft sand make it especially attractive for families with small children. There were a lot of them. Although many sources write that the water there is warmer than on other beaches, for us, it was still very cold, but I can imagine that in summer, it may be true. But we tried to swim a little bit.
The beaches there are known for the brutal massacre of the Greeks by the Turks in 1824. About 700 people died. There is a legend that this is why the sand on the beach has a reddish-pink color, soaked in the blood of those killed; in fact, small shells of sea inhabitants give this shade to the sand. The rest of the sand is white, fine, magnificent!
If you go a little to the right, there is a bay with warmer water. There is a beautiful landscape there - black volcanic stones!
There are a couple of places selling beer, juice and sandwiches. The taverns are less than 5 minutes away by car. We had some food with ourselves and then stopped at the taverna on the way back home.
Summary, Simos beach is a nice place. Wildlife lovers will have what to enjoy there as the views around are gorgeous.
