Farewell Bend Park - Wednesday Walk (26 photos)

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago

Last week we probably had our warmest day of the year. So it was time to get out for a little walk in an area I haven't visited yet in the city of Bend, Oregon. Follow along as I take you on a tour of Farewell Bend Park.😎

This 22 acre park along the Deschutes River is part of a larger trail system that encompasses the Old Mill District (stacks in the distance) and Riverbend park on the opposite shore. Here is a post I did last month with some more information about the Old Mill District.

Although it was a warm sunny day it is still the middle of winter so some ice and snow were still visible in this marshy area.

A little detour onto the boardwalk for some better viewing of some of the many bird species that inhabit the area. I will be crossing the bridge in the distance to walk the other side of the river.

A raft or a paddling of ducks as seen from the boardwalk.

Some art work at the entrance to the bridge that remembers Bend's past as a lumber town.

Once across the bridge you begin a short walk along the cliffs on the river bank

I like the contrast of colors in this shot.

A view of the road bridge up ahead that I will cross to complete my little loop.

Some more shots of the cliffs as I work my way to the bridge.

Views of some balancing rocks on the edge of the cliffs.

I think the following structure may have been a device to aid log carriers to deposit their logs in the river to float down to the mill.

A nice flat surface to roll your truck or wagon up onto...

and a reinforced slope to make sure the logs reach the river.

The remains of a wharf or dock that perhaps helped give the workers access to control the logs.

A view looking upstream from under the road bridge.

A couple panoramas of the view from the bridge.

A falcon perched in a tree top. See more about him in my post from yesterday.

A tree planter statue in the center of a roundabout. More dedication to the history of the area.

And a last look back toward the Old Mill area where all the logs were heading.

Well that finishes my Wednesday Walk for today. Hope you enjoyed the tour. 😀
