Southside Blues

I grew up about a mile from these cliff tops, but I rarely go there now. Famously, Bells Beach is the home of the Rip Curl Pro, but it's the cliffs to the right of Bells I'm walking on this morning, mainly because I was meant to meet a girlfriend there for a surf.

Meant to.

But by the time I got there at 7.30, she was already in the water. I felt a prickle of frustration as we'd discussed the night before how I didn't want to paddle out alone because I'd never surfed that break before. It's a little heavier than what I'm used to, and besides, a left hander.

So, I didn't go out and just walked around the cliff tops instead, watching the surfers below. I'm not a left hand surfer, so it wasntI a break I actually wanted to surf, but I would have liked to at least paddle out to break some of my anxieties. I was mad at her but madder at myself.

Still, it was so beautiful walking around in the morning light with the spectacular views. Although it's only half an hour down the road from me, I haven't been there in years. Maybe I'll paddle out another time when I'm feeling less chicken.

The huge cliffs are dangerous at the moment. Two summers ago a huge part of the cliff collapsed and killed a guy below. A friend flies his plane up there and takes footage of big fissures in the cliffs. I'd never shelter in the shade on the beach, that's for sure, and when I walk along the beach, I walk along the shoreline, as far away from them as I can.

When I was a kid we used to gallop our horses along that beach. I think they'd throw the book at you if you did that now. Times have changed.

Instead, I surfed down the road at a more familiar break, so I still got my gills wet.

The frustration faded away in the cold water. Blues into blues.

With Love,

They say lefties are the only people in their right mind. When I think back on my childhood on the coast I also have those wonderful memories. While we never galloped horses on the beach we also did things that they would now probably throw an entire library at! Their loss for the locking up freedom

They say lefties are the only people in their right mind.

Ha brilliant.

Sometimes I wish the world would just reverse 30 years. It seemed so much more free then and I can't say anythings improved much.

Agreed! How can anyone think it's better. Of course reversing 30 years would also reverse some wrinkles and creaks in funny places

Who could stay mad seeing views such as these before you? @riverflows

Glad things worked out and you rode the waves you were comfortable with! 🌊🏄‍♀️🌊

I know right? The ocean just dissolves it all. Had a rough day the other day and was sooo stressed I didn't sleep. I just hightailed to ocean, cried and stared at the waves for a few hours and felt better.

Nice you got out there. The best laid plans...

One should not attach to anything! Let it flow through like water...
