Musing on Propagating House Plants

Here I am again.

Sometimes I go around the house with a pair of scissors... eyeing my pothos. Checking which ones have enough leaves. "You won't miss one", I say, then... snip!

It's weird that I find it satisfying to snip the stem of a plant, pop it in water, and watch those tiny roots unfurl. It is like cheating nature somehow, making new life out of leftovers.

I've prepared a used tray and plastic pots and filled them with potting mix, then transferred the leaves with roots from the jars. It's like playing science experiments. If it works, amazing! If it doesn't, no big deal. But most of the time it does work!

And when I see those first roots forming, I get way too excited. Like, I showed this one to my neighbor. She just nodded politely, lol. I know she does not care as much as I do, but I still share.

Basil is one of those herbs I keep a pot on the windowsill for salads, pasta, or just to smell when I need a mood boost.

It grows fast, loves the warmth, and it's the easiest way to feel like a kitchen wiz!

I think this is called a cylindrical snake plant. The tips are drying up. And it needs some tending and TLC.

This ponytail palm used to be a tiny plant that sat on a shelf upstairs. It has overgrown its pot! Now, what must I do with it now?

Propagation is simple and soothing. It makes me feel like I've got magical hands. So yeah, just me, a pair of scissors, and some leafy optimism.

My neighbor, at the tiny house is the son of a plant nursery owner.
He has trays of plants that he is propagating @silversaver888 he’s always excited to show me what has started to have roots!🤗

Cuttings really are a great way to grow some more plants. Just put them in water and most of the time they do grow some roots. Great job, and you have so many nice plants in your house. The green really does make the home feel more comfortable doesn't it. Awesome post @silversaver888 !

Looking good! Our aloe plant is still alive somehow, but the "leaves" are starting to droop out of the pot and I am afraid they are going to break off or come loose from the soil at some point. We also have our palms that we are going to try to bring in from the deck for the winter and see if we can keep them alive in the basement until next year.

I hope the palms are not too large yet! Gardeners suggest that you bring them into the house during the cold months.

I'm not even sure they are palms. We are just going to try to pull them inside and see what happens. I have a sheet of plywood I am going to put down in the basement, then we bought some of those trays for the pots to sit on. If they die, they die, we only paid about $20 a piece for them.
