🇬🇧 Our Wednesday walk reveals the change of season reaching our Cantabrian mountain. The beginning of winter is settling gently into Asturias, and although the days are now shorter, a bright sun has joined us to illuminate our hike to Peña Reonda. We have to leave quite early to have enough time in case of problems. From Collanzo, a small village in the valley, the hike begins in brisker air than in recent weeks. The sun only touches the peaks for now and will take time to reach the valley. I climb to meet it by taking the tracks that lead to the pastures. The first images show a very sharp morning light, and I must wait a little longer.
🇫🇷 Notre balade du mercredi nous fait découvrir le changement de saison qui touche notre montagne Cantabrique. Le début de l’hiver s’installe doucement dans les Asturies mais, même si les journées sont désormais plus courtes, un soleil franc s’est invité pour illuminer notre randonnée jusqu’à la Peña Reonda. Il faut partir assez tôt pour avoir du temps en cas de problème. Depuis Collanzo, petit village dans la vallée, le départ se fait dans un air plus vif que ces dernières semaines. Le soleil ne touche encore que les cimes et mettra du temps à descendre dans la vallée. Je vais à sa rencontre en montant par les pistes qui mènent aux pâturages. Les premières images montrent une lumière matinale très prononcée, je dois attendre encore.
🇪🇸 Nuestro paseo del miércoles nos hace descubrir el cambio de estación que alcanza nuestra montaña Cantábrica. El inicio del invierno se instala suavemente en Asturias, y aunque los días ya son más cortos, un sol radiante se ha unido para iluminar nuestra caminata hacia Peña Reonda. Hay que salir bastante temprano para tener tiempo en caso de algún problema. Desde Collanzo, un pequeño pueblo en el valle, la salida se hace con un aire más fresco que en las últimas semanas. El sol solo toca las cumbres por ahora y tardará en bajar al valle. Subo a su encuentro por las pistas que conducen a los pastos. Las primeras imágenes muestran una luz matinal muy marcada y aún debo esperar un poco.
🇬🇧 The ascent to Peña Reonda unfolds gradually, crossing former pastures now silent. The herds have left the heights in recent days, the autumn transhumance having been hastened by the announcement of a cold front. Only a few empty enclosures bear witness to their recent presence. This absence of livestock brings an impression of total calm, reinforced by the clarity of the sky. Along the way, some patches of frost persist in the shadier areas, signs that nights are becoming harsh even if the sun still pleasantly warms the exposed slopes. Around us, the trees have lost their leaves, their bare silhouettes outlined against the first snows that have fallen at higher altitude.
🇫🇷 La montée vers la Peña Reonda se fait progressivement, traversant d’anciens pâturages aujourd’hui silencieux. Les troupeaux ont quitté les hauteurs ces derniers jours, la transhumance d’automne ayant été accélérée par l’annonce d’un front froid. Seuls quelques enclos vides témoignent de leur présence récente. Cette absence de bétail offre une sensation de calme absolu, amplifiée par la clarté du ciel. Au fil du chemin, quelques traces de givre persistent dans les zones plus ombragées, signes que les nuits commencent à être rudes même si le soleil réchauffe encore agréablement les pentes exposées. Autour de nous, les arbres ont perdu leurs feuilles, laissant leurs silhouettes dénudées se découper sur les premières neiges tombées en altitude.
🇪🇸 La subida hacia Peña Reonda se hace de forma progresiva, atravesando antiguos pastos hoy silenciosos. Los rebaños han abandonado las alturas en los últimos días, y la trashumancia otoñal se aceleró con el anuncio de un frente frío. Solo algunos cercados vacíos dan testimonio de su presencia reciente. Esta ausencia de ganado ofrece una sensación de calma absoluta, amplificada por la claridad del cielo. A lo largo del camino, quedan algunas huellas de escarcha en las zonas más sombrías, señales de que las noches comienzan a ser duras aunque el sol aún calienta agradablemente las laderas expuestas. A nuestro alrededor, los árboles han perdido sus hojas, dejando sus siluetas desnudas recortarse sobre las primeras nieves caídas en altitud.
🇬🇧 As we gain altitude, the vegetation thins out and the panoramas become spectacular. The mountains surrounding the area already show winter shades: a mixture of grey, dark green and white that creates an atmosphere both stark and majestic. Peña Reonda, with its rounded shape, and especially its neighbour Pico Cuchu, offer a privileged viewpoint over the surrounding mountains. The nearby peaks are already dusted with snow, some almost completely white, while the valleys still hold on to their late-autumn colours. This blend of seasons, visible at a glance, is what makes early-winter hikes in Asturias so magical.
🇫🇷 En prenant de la hauteur, la végétation s’éclaircit et les panoramas deviennent spectaculaires. Les montagnes qui encerclent la zone affichent déjà des nuances hivernales : un mélange de gris, de vert sombre et de blanc qui crée une atmosphère à la fois dépouillée et majestueuse. La Peña Reonda, avec sa silhouette arrondie et surtout son voisin le pico cuchu, offrent un point d’observation privilégié sur les montagnes environnantes. Les sommets voisins sont déjà poudrés de neige, certains presque entièrement blancs, tandis que les vallées restent encore dans leur palette d’automne tardif. Ce mélange de saisons, visible en un seul coup d’œil, fait toute la magie des randonnées pré-hivernales dans les Asturies.
🇪🇸 Al ganar altura, la vegetación se aclara y los panoramas se vuelven espectaculares. Las montañas que rodean la zona ya muestran tonos invernales: una mezcla de gris, verde oscuro y blanco que crea una atmósfera a la vez austera y majestuosa. Peña Reonda, con su silueta redondeada, y sobre todo su vecino el Pico Cuchu, ofrecen un punto de observación privilegiado sobre las montañas circundantes. Las cumbres cercanas ya están espolvoreadas de nieve, algunas casi completamente blancas, mientras que los valles conservan todavía su paleta de otoño tardío. Esta mezcla de estaciones, visible de un solo vistazo, es lo que da su magia a las caminatas de principios de invierno en Asturias.
🇬🇧 We enjoy a short break at the summit, lulled by a light wind from the north, cold enough to remind us not to linger too long. A snack including walnuts and chestnuts gathered barely two weeks ago helps us regain strength for the descent. It begins cautiously, then more easily, following a path that winds between sparse woods and abandoned meadows. Back in Collanzo, we find the smell of burning wood in the chimneys and the quiet atmosphere of mountain villages when the cold season returns. The Peña Reonda hike, at the start of this winter, has been a welcome pause, a moment suspended between two seasons, when nature prepares for rest but continues to offer landscapes of striking beauty.
🇫🇷 On profite d’un moment de pause au sommet, bercé par un léger vent venu du nord, suffisamment froid pour rappeler qu'il ne faut pas s'attarder plus que de raison. Une collation comprenant notamment des noix et des châtaignes ramassées il y a à peine deux semaines permet de reprendre des forces pour la descente. Elle se fait d'abord prudemment puis tranquillement, suivant un sentier qui serpente entre forêts clairsemées et prairies délaissées. De retour à Collanzo, on retrouve l’odeur du bois brûlé dans les cheminées et cette atmosphère tranquille des villages de montagne lorsque la saison froide revient. La randonnée de la Peña Reonda en ce début d’hiver aura été une belle parenthèse, un moment suspendu entre deux saisons, où la nature se prépare au repos mais continue d’offrir des paysages d’une beauté saisissante.
🇪🇸 Disfrutamos de una breve pausa en la cumbre, mecidos por un ligero viento del norte, lo bastante frío como para recordarnos que no conviene quedarse demasiado tiempo. Un tentempié que incluye nueces y castañas recogidas hace apenas dos semanas nos permite recuperar fuerzas para el descenso. Este comienza con cuidado y luego continúa con tranquilidad, siguiendo un sendero que serpentea entre bosques dispersos y prados abandonados. De vuelta en Collanzo, encontramos el olor a leña quemada en las chimeneas y la atmósfera tranquila de los pueblos de montaña cuando vuelve la estación fría. La caminata a Peña Reonda, en este inicio de invierno, ha sido un hermoso paréntesis, un momento suspendido entre dos estaciones, cuando la naturaleza se prepara para el descanso pero sigue ofreciendo paisajes de una belleza sobrecogedora.

You show a new side of Spain for me. I was there in high summer and the landscape looked totally different. Colours and all. But I was close to the coast.
Thank you @lifehackeraf. I’m not on the coast, but not too far, maybe 50 km. The landscape definitely changes with the seasons, and I hope I can share some photos with more snow soon. The colors aren’t as vibrant as in summer or autumn, but the mountain is clean and quiet now.
Well it was arid and beautiful but stones and azure when I was there many moons ago.
This is another whole side of Spain.
