The nature | La naturaleza

A few weeks ago I started a series of illustrations regarding the way we interact with nature. They have a special meaning for me since this lock down period started. Going out to the parks and beaches is one of the things that I miss for the most.

Hace unas semanas empecé una serie de ilustraciones referente a la manera como nos relacionamos con la naturaleza. Tienen un significado especial para mí desde que inició esta cuarentena. Salir a los parques y playas es una de las cosas que más extraño y que más anhelo.

This illustration belongs to that series, and it also responds to a series of practices that I have been doing regarding style and color. I have really enjoyed exploring techniques and styles, but I definitely respond to two particular styles: comic and traditional or digital art with traditional painting style.

Esta ilustración pertenece a esa serie, al igual que también responde a una serie de prácticas que he estado haciendo respecto al estilo y al color. He disfrutado muchísimo explorando técnicas y estilos, pero definitivamente respondo a dos estilos particulares: el cómic y el arte tradicional o digital con estilo tradicional de pintura.

So as a creative unlocking technique I've been doing the following:
First I draw a human figure, generally a woman because it is very easy for me to identify with the feminine forms, and then I imagine this figure in an environment.

Así que como técnica de des-bloqueo creativo he estado haciendo lo siguiente:
primero dibujo una figura humana, generalmente una mujer debido a que me es muy fácil identificarme con las formas femeninas, y luego imagino esta figura en un ambiente.

Contrary to the technique of drawing the figure first and then the environment, I prefer to start painting the environment and the figure as a whole, thus making it easier for me to control the light sources. I'been using a reduced color palette and sometimes vibrant.

Contrario a la técnica de dibujar primero la figura y luego el ambiente, prefiero empezar a pintar el ambiente y la figura como un todo, así se me hace más fácil controlar las fuentes de luz. Por otro lado, mi paleta de colores se hace reducida y en ocasiones, vibrante.

Here I share a little of my process.

Acá les comparto un poco de mi proceso.

As I mentioned, I start my sketch first with the human figure.

Como les mencioné, empiezo mi boceto primero con la figura humana.

Here I contextualized the figure. At first I thought of an egg, a flower, or even the entrails of an animal. But I kept the tree, without ruling out the previous options for future illustration.

Acá puse la figura en contexto. Al principio pensé en un huevo, una flor o incluso las entrañas de un animal. pero me quedé con el árbol, sin descartar las opciones anteriores para una futura ilustración.

I placed flat colors. Respecting my color palette, which I later varied a bit.

Coloqué colores planos. Respetando mi paleta de colores, que luego varié un poco.

Here I placed my main light source: the tree's inside. I also added shadows to the body.

Acá coloqué mi fuente de luz principal: las entrañas del árbol. También agregué sombras al cuerpo.

The light source and its temperature created a conflict with the warm background, so I decided to change the background tone to a dark one, giving me the feeling that it is night.

La fuente de luz y la temperatura de la misma me creaba un conflicto con el fondo cálido, así que decidí cambiarle el tono de fondo por uno oscuro, que me diera la sensación de que es de noche.

Finally I added details: firefly lights and trees in the background.

Finalmente agregué detalles: luces de luciérnagas y los árboles de fondo.
