"Awakenings" is Done! Time to Sleep!

in OnChainArt4 years ago (edited)

If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you may have seen some previews of the color process on this piece of art over the past week or so... but I do believe this is the first time I'm posting "Awakenings" in its color glory here on Hive!

It's been a loooong time coming for this piece to get finished. It features Julie of course, the mysterious, beautiful, powerful, and downright hilarious dryad who is already establishing herself as a fan favorite character of "I Thought It Would Be Zombies..." …even before the first issue of the comic is officially released! I started the initial pencil sketch last November! In the interim I put it down for long periods of time but finally blew off the digital dust on it in earnest a couple weeks ago, buckled down, and finished.

I'm never completely satisfied with my artwork... but this is about as close as it gets. At least for the moment I'm rather happy with how it turned out!

I've been trying to up my color game this year and been studying, and I think it's starting to show. I still have plenty to learn though.

I'm much more comfortable in pen and ink (particularly digital!) although I will admit that "leaf fatigue" did set in and my linework suffered a bit toward the end... although it's probably not that noticeable at a glance! 😅

I focused on getting "Awakenings" done for a couple reasons. First, it was an image I just couldn't get out of my head and wanted to complete. And second, I thought it would make an excellent second outing for me with @nftshowroom.

So, I've already got it posted up over there as some rare #cryptoart non fungible tokens! Just like with my first piece, "Sundown", I released a 1/1 black and white "original art" edition, as well as a 30 token color print run that's a bit more affordable.

You can browse my gallery and see all these pieces in some nice crazy high resolution glory even if you're just window shopping over at https://nftshowroom.com/bryan-imhoff/gallery.

Whew. Now I gotta get back to work on the actual story pages of "I Thought It Would Be Zombies..." After I get some sleep of course!

Her skin is green or purple? This coloring scheme feels like she’s on other side of a colored glass.

But her skin is possibly green, like that photo of trio down there. Also the color of her top matches. Are these two the same character?

Correct! Green skin, same character as you see in other images. The lighting effects are something I've been playing around with a lot. In the environment this story takes place in, the sky is filled with near constant auroras... which leads to lots of green & purple light sources. Throwing some purple beams of light across her green skin created that blue tone, which led me to also push the yellows a bit, creating a couple complimentary color schemes with the purple/green and blue/yellow pairings playing off each other. I don't think I've dialed "the look" I'm going for in perfectly yet, but it's getting better!

I see! That explains the shades of different colors on her. I like something about graphic novels that they can passively do the worldbuilding with visuals and with details that can outclass big money films even.

I will look forward to seeing where this goes.
Great work mate!

This is amazing! You are really talented.

Aww shucks! I appreciate it.

Very cool picture with so much detail.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

What amazing colours, it's so vibrant and beautiful!

Thank you! I struggle with color as I've spent many years doing the pencil and ink work... but color is a comparatively new skill. I've been really studying up the past year or so and feel like I may be starting to turn the corner and see some results. So glad that stands out for you in this piece.

Hey man, how's it going on for you? Haven't seen you for a while.

I'm still lurking & reading a good amount, but admittedly my productivity has been far below par. Things aren't good unfortunately. My mother is dying and it's taking a toll on my mental & physical well being for sure. I'm just trying to get my mind right & find the reset button. I appreciate you thinking of me & checking in! Sorry for the downer reply... but you asked! 😬 I hope all is well with you.

I'm very sorry to hear you're in such turmoil. 🙁 I hope you get to see better days! With everything, that is. You don't need to apologize at all, I appreciate you expressing yourself. :)
I'm doing pretty much alright. Things are looking up.
