[Timelapse] Tickled Pink | Drawing with the Note 10+

in OnChainArt5 years ago (edited)

I tried out Clip Studio Paint for Galaxy for the first time today. I have been looking for the Android version for a long time now. Thanks to one of @straykat's posts, I found out that I had been looking in the wrong place after all. It wasn't found in Google Play, because it is in Galaxy Store.

It's no secret that since I started drawing on my Note 10+, I have been looking for a drawing app that would can be utilized the same way programs can be utilized on a desktop. I've tried quite a lot in the past few months:

  • Autodesk SketchBook
  • Artflow
  • ibis Paint X
  • Infinite Painter
  • Adobe Photoshop Sketch

But nothing came close to how I can play around with MediBang Paint for Android. I stuck with it and developed my own formula in drawing with it over time. So when I installed Clip Studio Paint, I wasn't expecting much.

Except... it's actually amazing. High learning curve for someone who came from MediBang, but should I manage to get used to it, I think it'll be my new to-always-use drawing app.

Tickled Pink

I had to find good reference to test out the new app I've downloaded, and I found this photo on Pinterest. It was of a lady smiling so happily I'm envious. I already knew it was going to be challenging as I would be trying out a foreign app, but I did anyway.

Drawing Tickled Pink

Before doing this whole drawing business, I tried out the different brushes it offered. I realized that it does have a really good set of blending tools, and for someone who doesn't really use that, it made me curious how it would go.

To say that getting used to the new drawing process is difficult is taking it lightly. I knew it was going to be way more difficult that I was thinking.

The pencil tool had a real pencil texture to it. I'd say I love it, but I got used to sketching with MediBang's own pen tool that it felt weird to use Clip Studio's. Like MediBang, it has its own "correction" level, which they call "stabilization." It allows my strokes not to be shaky and tends to be predictive.

Drawing this, I tried to explore the app more. I tried as many brushes and tools as I can that would work, and tried to get a more personal feel to it. Everything I did so far made me cringe so bad and I new the output wouldn't be as nice as it would if I drew on MediBang.

Still, even when I am less than pleased with the output, I liked everything about Clip Studio Paint so far! You can even export your project as PSD, which can't be done on MediBang.

I still have a lot of exploration to do that I plan to execute on my following drawings, but I just know for sure that it's worth trying.

Timelapse

Here's a timelapse video that spans the whole process -- from messy sketches down to the coloring. I had to do lots of cuts to parts where I was trying to export progress into JPG because they were taking too long. It wasn't as straightforward as it had been on MediBang.

Notes / Clip Studio Paint for Galaxy Review

It was over all really nice. The locations of tools were intuitive, and while it calls for a lot of practice to get used to, it feels Adobe Photoshop level. The brushes were awesome! I got to explore a few of them and they resemble textures of actual traditional tools they were developed after. Color picking then switching to the color tool took a lot of effort. I'm not sure if there was a gesture to short cut this, but if there is, I still haven't found it. Increasing the pixel radius of the brushes to the thousands tends to make the program lag, which was a bummer because I normally work on large canvases.

It turns out that Clip Studio Paint has been around for a while now for Samsung Galaxy devices. Users can avail the 6-month free premium plan it offers for Galaxy users and 3 months for Windows, macOS, and iPad. If I remember correctly from its website, it is completely free for iPhone users (luckyyy).

I've got Clip Studio on PC but I mostly use it to do basic color balance and levels, and applying gradient maps.

When I can afford a drawing tablet for PC I'll probably start using it full-time as opposed to the trash I've been using.

as opposed to the trash I've been using.

lmao! all these android apps need some leveling up seriously. i would want to try Clip Studio on PC in the future, too!

Oh, no, sorry! I was referring to my Samsung Tab S 10.5 from 2015, It's total trash. Keeps crashing. I can't tell you how many drawings I've lost.

I actually love the apps and variety we have on Andriod. I just need better tech to work on.

i completely misunderstood again! this is like, the nth time i ever did that. 😅

samsung's latest releases on their tablets look awesome, but getting the note easily forces me not to spend on any tech in the coming five years hahahaha. while i do agree that drawing apps on android are good, there are just so many things that can be done with desktop versions that have no workaround in the mobile versions. :(

😅It's alright. I often have to parse comments in bits too. I think it's only natural in these online spaces.

I do agree that most apps on android are still wanting but I think that's the outcome of developing in non-uniform spaces or not having a single ecosystem to cater to like how Procreate (which I'd argue is comparable to desktop apps) develops strictly for Apple, or even how pc applications generally made for windows platform with minimal differences between hardware builds.

Perhaps, with smart device maker moving toward a more stripped android interfaces, the devs for Clip Studio, Ibispaint, Infinite Painter etc, will have the opportunity to develop in a more general and unified way and that could open a path toward making those experiences on android apps comparable to desktop applications or, at the least, Procreate.

I'm glad you liked it. Your output is still great though. :)
Most pens and brushes have stabilization control and I agree the brush gets laggy when you increase the size. >.<

you were literally an angel that got me to finally find clip studio! hahaha. i have seriously been searching for it for a long time until i found your post and managed to finally check out their website. XDD

thank you! <3 i still have to do a lot of exploration, though. the amount of tools in there is so overwhelmingly good!

hehe! you're very welcome! ❤️
